Car won't start or radio won't power up? Check you fuses?

This unfortunately is the primary cause of many Electrical Problems (i.e., Swapping out the Stock Radio Equipment).
I have seen many issues and Check Engine Light on the newer Vehicles as any incorrectly Ground Wire left Floating will cause immense Electrical Problems.

Being that GEN5 Maxima is still with lots of Mechanical linkages it should not get affected like the newer Maxima models that have lots more sensor type equipment.

However, leaving a Floating Ground or a Ground wire touching other equipment such as AC frame components or other equipment within the Dash will certainly get you rewarded with the CHECK ENGINE Monster.

doesn't the entire system have to be taken out due to some electrical resistance deal these bose systems have ? like, you have to remove speakers, disable the amp and run new wires? i think that's what i had to do w/ my 02.

No. The 00/01 are different Bose systems from the 02/03. They are similar. You definitely do not need to in a 2000/01.
