2nd Gen DE Swap Questions
A week after finally gutting my cats so the car would rev over 3k again, I changed the oil and immediately developed rod knock in the 315k mile VQ35DE my 04 Infiniti I35, which is based on the 5.5gen Maxima. Time for a new engine, preferably one without the timing chain guide issues. I need to do this as quickly and cheaply as possible (and not have to redo it again soon) as it's my dd.
I want an engine with the revised oil gallery gaskets so I don't have to mess with them, and 2012 engines near me are lower miles & cheaper than 2013. I've read that the oil gallery gaskets were revised "around" the start of my2012, but does anybody know the date they went into use or if it was mid-year? What's the newest motor you have heard of still having the issue? Is there a Nissan service bulletin regarding this advising to replace them if manufactured before a certain date?
The Maxima engine has different and better heads than the Altima engine, but is it any more work other than the throttle body plug? I saw someone had posted that the Altima engine just needed some bolts, washers, spacers, etc to align the accessories. Is this also true of the Maxima engine, or does it need the Nisformance brackets and with the Altima engine you can get away without them?
Messing around on Car-part.com, I've discovered that the Murano/Quest engines are 2nd gen DE after 2009 for the Murano & 2011 for the Quest. These engines have the same heads as the 2013-14 Altima (the 2007-12 Altima has different heads), but they have a different block & oil pan. The accessory setup is likely different and the Nisformance brackets might not work, but it's possible the 2nd gen accessories on these might connect better with the 5th gen maxima than those on the Altima/Maxima blocks, or alternatively the block not require as much work as the 2nd gen Altima/Maxima block to use the 5th gen Maxima accessories with it.
-Has anybody swapped a 2nd gen Murano/Quest engine into an 5th gen Maxima?
-Does anybody know the difference in the blocks or have easy access to both a 2nd gen DE Quest/Murano and Altima/Maxima block?
-Does anybody know what changed in the Altima heads between 2012 and 2013?
