Rattle under Timing Cover...what could it be?
Hi Friends,
5th gen, with 160k and well maintained car.
A few days ago, i discovered my Radiator was partially clogged (so i replaced it). I ALSO Did an oil change and filled it to 5.5 qts (line showed it topped off perfect).
Left the shop and ran the car for a few days.
What da ???
Anyone have a clue as to 'whats causing the noise?'

- 2 days later, the car started STALLING at intersections and making a knocking sound. I got the car home and the next day, i heard a fairly loud rattle coming from the Timing chain cover. My mechanic took the cover off (what a pain in the **** job), and discovered the gears were pretty worn but 'NOTHING' to indicate loose guides or timing chain.
- IN ADDITION; a large amount of oil was missing ??? Only 2 days ago, i had 5.5 quarts. When we dropped the oil pan, only 3 qts was left (that means i'm missing 2 qts) ???
- ALSO, mechanic showed me the BLACK OIL had bits of 'Floating Specs' on Top of the Oil~ (he said they were probably metal pieces)
What da ???
Anyone have a clue as to 'whats causing the noise?'
- ALSO, where did my oil go (only ran the car for 2 days), probably 100 miles at most
- AND, what is floating in the oil?

PS My bad...we put 5 qts in (not 5.5)
*You say it only requires 4....what kinda motor you working on???

That's because it does. 4.25 or so. Metal on metal noises, bits in the oil, dying and missing the majority of the oil you just put in. Something went seriously wrong.

**LETS BET....HOW MUCH YOU WANNA BET the Motor is still good?

That's why I said it didn't matter. 5 isn't enough to hit the crank and foam, but I thought it was funny how he was so matter of fact about it. I always overfill 1/2 qt for the inevitable consumption if 1st gen DE.

Appears to be a Gag-fly (Child) on the forum (worthless twit). All posts are STOOPID REMARKS.
The car is fixed retard.
Simple but complicated (to you). I wont' be sharing the solution WITH YOU TWIT (but i can tell you it was a lot more simple than expected)

I remember the denial I faced within myself when I first had this problem after I had just bought my max. My max burned a qt per 400 mi. Now I'm on my third engine and know how to rip it out and put it back in like its nothing. Thank you life.

1st engine oil burn. 1qt per 400 miles. The engine it came with when I bought it.
2nd engine came from an 06 altima. The exhaust cam sprocket broke off on bank 1. I suspect this was my fault from improper torquing when I replaced the timing chains 20k miles earlier.
3rd engine came from 05 altima. Also starting to exhibit some oil burn.
4th will be a either an HR or the new gen VQ35DE.

Subpar piston rings and or valve seals, Cats disintegrating back into cylinder, Oil being sucked through the intake via PCV valve. Yea the first engine pulled great just liked to drink oil.

Ive done this with filters on the current engine but I'm still experiencing the consumption. The only time I can see smoke is when I reverse real quick to go into the driveway after checking the mail box. Burns more when I high rev a lot. I'm guessing valve seals this time. Never had cats on this engine.

my cats are gutted as well. throwout bearing went out on my max a month after I got it so iende dup gutting the cats and doing oil pan gasket as well as the rear main seal and full clutch kit. I'm on the 3rd throwout bearing as well as second flywheel that came with a clutch kit.
