Hello all,
I'm technically brand new to the forum although I have obviously seen it in my google searches when researching miscellaneous parts for my maxima. (i apologize if I'm in the wrong place for this post)
I have an 03 Maxima SE Titanium Edition 4AT with 220k miles and all the features (sunroof, heated seats, heated steering wheel, Bose, premium wheels, etc...
I had a 97 maxima previously and when it died, I needed a car asap and went to the nearest lot with my tax return cash in hand and coincidentally found this gem. I had no intentions of finding another maxima and didn't actually care much at all about what I ended up with (almost landed on an older Forerunner lol)
I liked the 97 but it was worn out.. leather seats had a hole worn from a wallet in the back pocket, which was kinda funny honestly, and the previous owner mentioned how they use to shoot deer out the sun roof on back roads.. (also funny but not so nice for the car of course)
but this TE.. yea this TE is in 'great' condition for 190k miles IMO.. although after some research I realize I probably overpaid but that's what you get when you don't shop around.. but I'm completely satisfied with the purchase even though I have spent more on repairs in the last 4 years than I originally paid for it granted some of that was my own fault (for example, I bought an aftermarket alternator and paid a shop to install it. Then it went bad before I made it home but the shop wouldn't cover the labor since I didn't buy the part from them... they wouldn't sell me a higher amperage alternator so I found a 125 Duralast Gold for cheaper but like I said it went bad. although I did get my money back for that.
I just love this car now. and now Tis car is worth way more to me than it will ever be to anyone else so Im curious what more I can get out of it before it's time to give up and find something else to tinker on. I expect to trade in a 2015 v6 challenger I inherited and get a truck as my primary vehicle for various reasons but keep the maxima as long as is reasonable to help keep miles off the truck and as I mentioned I just like it. so I still find myself scrolling wheel and tire setups, suspension mods, various engine mods, and even considered seeking repaint quotes even tho I feel like it may be a wasted effort.. like if the body is too rusted to make it that far, then I'll cut my losses when something catastrophic fails and look into something else like a 350z.
Sorry this is so wordy..
TLDR
I got this 03 TE AT w/ 220k. I love it but I'm not sure it's worthy of a serious mod budget. I will have another vehicle as my primary eventually so this car can sit until I have the time to finish a project if need be.
What would yall recommend?
1.) Drive it til the wheels fall off and don't waste my time and money?
2.) Or can it be maintained enough to make it another 5+ years that I'd feel good about spending $2000 on wheels and tires and maybe another $2000 on engine/suspension mods? These are just ballpark numbers I'm not exactly certain what is worth it and what's not.. I've been seeing a very wide array of mods on this and other sites that range from a few hundreds to a few thousands.. I'm finding it difficult to spend THOUSANDS on a car with over 220k miles with primarily original parts no matter what the condition, although I have done a decent job of keeping it in good condition since purchase like new front struts, new rear brake calipers and rotors, new valve covers and seals (NO LEAKS), new AC compressor, new alt, and various other small maintenance tings..
if you read all this,
Thanks and sorry in advance if I'm wasting your time.

220k on the engine 😬 sheesh for how much I love seeing other orgers working on their cars i’d lean towards option 1 just for how notorious the first gen 3.5’s are for burning oil.
with that said love that car for as long as you have it, man. if something breaks replace/upgrade it. maintain that beauty until the engine/tranny dies then make the decision whether to pour money into it.
Very nice! I have one literally just like it except mine is a 6 speed. You should be good for another 5 years just keep an eye on the oil level.. Mine definitely likes the oil. If you want to keep it long term, you will probably want to do an HR swap eventually.
good call. A friend and I did a little bit of buffing on it one day when working on something else and I did the passenger side better than he did the driver side, so when I finally got a drill and full restoration kit, the passenger side looks better still but overall they both look way better than before and visibility is much better as well. I still hate how many blemishes I find in the paint every time I wash it but it doesn't keep me from driving it so I can't complain.
It's an 18 year old car at this point so blemishes, scratches and dings are expected at this point if it's a daily driver and not a garage queen.
Just in the last year, my'02 has seemed to have taken a massive beating and while it's depressing to see the new bangs and bruises, it still puts a smile on my face when I get out of the city and onto the highway.
