After car sits overnight, I get a slight backfire (or popping) noise when pulling out of the driveway. 2001 Maxima with ~140,000 on the clock.

1. Car is cold from sitting overnight.
2. Start car.
3. 5 seconds later, put in drive (car is parked backwards into driveway so that I don't have to reverse out)
4. Idle 25-30 feet down the driveway
5. Apply "normal" gas pedal at end of driveway and the backfire/popping happens.
6. Car doesn't want to "go", but about 5-10 seconds later, she runs just fine.
7. No CEL coming on at any time.

Can stop the car for gas on the way to work, start up and the backfire/popping doesn't happen. Only when cold from overnight. Temps overnight in my area around 50 degrees.

Dirty intake? MAF needs replaced/cleaned? Injector (original in car)? Spark plugs (~60,000 on them)? Coil pack?

There could possibly be Numerous things. My best suggestion would be to get a Scan tool or scanner and Use its Live Data function to view Items and Sensors. See what they are actually doing. Temp sensor could be -.40. Maf value could be Higher from a failing or dirty part, or could just be tune up time.

 

Thanks for the response. I think OReilly's let's you loan out a scan tool (or Autozone). Not sure. This morning, I listened carefully, and the backfire/popping seems to be through the intake as it sounds like it is coming from under the hood and not the exhaust.

Sounds like my baby needs some maintenance:
1. Clean out the TB of any carbon build-up.
2. Check the MAF section and see if dirty
3. Check the air filter housing and see if dirty
4. Change the PCV valve (probably original).
5. Check vacuum hoses for leaks (I have change several vacuum hoses over the last couple years).
6. Change the spark plugs

 

Get under the hood and start tearing things apart.

Differentiating a backfire noise coming out of the exhaust or from under the hood would help as well. As in like, the first thing you should figure out.
