Passenger Air Bag

Hi All,

After reading the diagnostic procedures in the two threads linked below I believe my passenger side air bag in my 2001 Maxima SE, is faulty based on the code. In the thread from Studman the instructions specifically mention the driver's side air bag module is located in the driver's side the air bag. Is the passenger side module also in the passenger side air bag?

Several salvage yards of driving distance from me have 5th generation maximas so I was going to pull a spare from one of these cars, but am i limited to 2000 - 2003 Maximas or would a 2004 use the same air bags

Many salvage yards on the USA side of the border won't sell air bags. I did see a couple of 2002 Maxima air bags right now for $75 each on Ebay. You had better grab them before Ebay cancels the listing.

Make sure it's not a defective Takata recall, had my passenger air bag done by the dealership a few months ago.

I keep getting those recall letters but I don't trust taking my car to the dealer. I've had so many people tell me it was a hassle or they got their car back with the dash messed up.

Nuevo Laredo has kilometers and kilometers of junk yards (yonke is the Mexican slang term). You can more than likely find air bags there. I have seen several older Maximas on the street in Mexico, so I know that Maximas exist in the Mexican market. Here's one that even has an online presence:

Maybe I'm crazy but I'd rather have an airbag light than run the risk of sending shrapnel into my passengers face.

Though if my car did have an airbag fault and I couldn't get the recall done I would just build a squib to keep the srs ecu happy and disable the bag.

that sucks, yea just get it done, its free. i honestly didn't notice anything after having a dealer do it, I had a bunch of organization in my glove compartment too, didn't notice anything too bad. they gave me a compliment on the high mileage nissan I had hahah.

I did a service record search on my Maxima and noticed a previous owner waited months for parts and gave up. I MIGHT trust Courtesy Nissan in Richardson. They stopped me from erroneously ordering a 4th Gen part AND they sell parts wholesale to the public on their website.

2 service techs wanted to buy mine after the recall was finished - drove away at 69,999 miles on odometer.
The 21 year old DataDot stickers are still on the side of the HID lenses.

Yep, the 4 bulb HID - they were new in 2002. DataDot was a recovery system where you registered and your lights were etched, I think it's the VIN in some sort of code.. I have the paperwork somewhere.

Thank you guys for all the responses. The salvage yards near me will sell the air bag units. My original question still stands. Is the passenger side air bag module in the air bag itself. And second what other years of Maximas (or other Nissan models) would use the same air bag?
