3.5 VQ Engine mounts

Hello, I was wondering if I could get a little help from some of you all..

My engine mounts are shot and I didn't find many DIY on YouTube except there is a fella that has a video to change out the front mount, but I really need to do the other 2 engine mounts as well and possibly the tranny mount, but I haven't inspected it yet.. Vehicle has 300k. How difficult are the other two engine mounts. Is there any videos or write ups I'm missing.. There's got to be more info about this somewhere. Shop quoted 10+ hours of labor for all 4 mounts. Thanks

the lower mounts are easy. remove 4 bolts that mount the lower beam to the chassis, remove the 2 longs molts that attach the beam to the engine brackets.

the only one that will give you a lil bit of a hard time is the upper tranny mount underneath the intake manifold.

when it comes to the mounts it's best to do all 4 at the same time so they all have equal strength. if you change the 2 lowers and not the upper you will get premature wear on the lowers. I have a 6MT so i upgraded all of them with Nisformance uppers and energy suspensions lowers. I didn't find out about the Nisformance uppers until years later and no one else seems to make urethane uppers.

Thanks for the encouragement. When you say lower beam, do you mean the crossmember?

Did you have to jack the engine or transmission up to get the lower ones out and new ones in? Are the new inserts difficult to press into the mounts or does a professional need to do this? I don’t have any kind of press.

whenever I remove the lower beam/crossmember i didn't have to support the engine. just have to remember to do it in the right order. unbolt the beam from the body than undo the long bolts going though the center of the mounts that attach it to the engine bracket. if your car is automatic you will need lower manual transmission mounts to put inserts into. the lowers differ in size from auto to manual but are interchangable. all the passenger side upper mounts ar ethe same but the driver side upper differ between auto and manual.

what I do with the old bushing is drill a bunch of holes than remove them than use a saw to cut the sleeve. out. if your interested I have an extra set of lower mounts already prepped to have bushings installed..

this is how the bushing sleeves look when they are removed from the mount

these are my lowers with energy suspensions inserts. these have to be pressed in.

this is how I press the in

these are my upper mounts with Nisformance inserts. they are 2 piece bushings and don't have to be pressed in. they also make lowers but i didn't know about them until after I got the Energy Suspension ones for my lowers. the energy suspension ones also have lifetime warranty... I have all their suspension bushings installed on my car also.

Wow! Thanks for all the detailed explanation. Dang, those sleeves looks like they were a lot of work.. I’m almost debating taking the easy way out and just getting a set of eBay or Amazon mounts.

I know the rubber isn’t nearly as good as the polyurethane, but at 300,000 miles I don’t plan on sinking much more money into it. I’m not sure I want to mess with pressing and removing bushing sleeves, but I’d probably pay a little to have it done. The thing is, shops are are expensive in my area.

Do you think cheap mounts will be alright and similar to OEM or no? Am I going to hate the way the car drives with cheap mounts? I don’t really care how stiff or loose as long as there’s no shaking.

don't buy them from Ebay or Amazon, no telling what level of quality you will receive. get them from Rockauto.com they have parts from legit brands for really good prices...

these cars are built to last, I swapped my engine last year at 330,XXX and the old one was actually still running when I pulled it. I just wanted more power...

I just checked Rockauto.com and right now is a good time to buy the mounts, they are having a close out sale on the Anchor brand mounts and the prices are real good.
