So recently my engine has developed a knocking sound, which can only mean that the engine is on its last legs. I’m still very new here so I’m probably going to get flamed for asking this, but since I have a 00’ maxima, is it possible to put in a VQ35HR, or will I have to go back to a stock 30de, also is there any other engines that are popular for swapping in this generation of maxima or is it pretty much relegated to just VQ’s?

I would get a second opinion on the knock; some accessories could be making the noise as well. Remove the accessory belts and see if the noise is still there.

As far as the swap, there are guys out there running VQ35 engines on VQ30 timing. Check out the ALL-MOTOR section of the forums and don't be a stranger to the search feature, there is plenty on information out there already.

 

alright ty, me and my brother haven’t delved too deep into the engine in fear of making it worse, but we are pretty sure it’s the worst it can be, it only happens when the throttle body is opened right now, I can’t hear it while driving but then again its hard to hear anything but road noise when you have shot rear struts. I’ve also looked into people in a similar situation to me right now and from what I’ve seen a lot of people on here just like to clown them for being new lol, but thank you for being helpful!!

 

As long as the engine is not from a G35/350z or other RWD layout, it can be made to fit.
