GEN 5 Reporting In! Just sharing some strange issue with my beloved 2000 Nissan Maxima GLE.
Cranked up once to move it on the street parking and it never started again. Troubleshooted the issue with a PRO Automotive Battery charger and placed it on the 400-AMP Engine start setting and nope, didn't want to start. Went down underneath the car with a 19mm socket and small breaker bar and moved the crank shaft of the Engine a few turns to see if the starter got on an active spot to make electrical contact and nope, didn't want to start. Since the Maxima was on the road parking, I went ahead and called a super towing company (Wilson Towing) and he towed for 11 miles to Ruben Tires & Service where they found it was in fact the Lead Acid Battery! The battery lasted four (4) years and one (1) month! Not bad for Florida Weather.
---> Just very strange that the Engine didn't start with the PRO Battery Charger in the 400-AMP Engine start setting or maybe I didn't select it correctly? Almost acted like a BMW or Mercedes as if you have a bad (Low Cranking AMP battery), it will not start! LOL!
The maxima is running like new now that it has a brand new 3-year battery with the highest Cold Cranking AMPS.
Hum, lets see........... "Occam's razor is a mental model which states that “it is futile to do with more what can be done with fewer”—in other words, the simplest explanation is most likely the right one."
Nope! Does not apply in my case nor in this post.
1. My Maxima exhibited a typical dead Engine Starter.
2. Yes, during which I turned off the PRO battery charger and Engine Starter the lights still maintained brightness up until I attempted to re-start the Engine and that's when I observed all the lights go out (Battery).
Summary:
The initial results of my troubleshooting perhaps confused me, especially the fact the PRO Battery charger in Engine Start setting was not successful in starting the Engine.
I stand with my post to alert those with the same issue in the future.
from my experience, when a battery is really bad it can be damn near impossible to jump start it. it's usually best to pull the battery cables off the battery, put a charger on it and see if it takes a charge. I recently picked up an Everstart battery charger from walmart for around $60 and it has a lot of good features.
Bingo. Shorted cells were taking all the current. Jump with battery disconnected or use a lithium jumper. I bought 4 of them for cheap on ebay (were on sale for under 50). GP4000
it's also good to have good terminal clamps and cables. my factory terminals are long gone and my ground cables are new. i picked up a set of brass terminals but used allen bolts instead of the box head bolts they came with. you can get different lengths of power and ground cables at the auto parts.
If you watch it while trying to crank. It can still output over 12V just fine until it's loaded.
exactly. also easy to see if its poor contact at the terminals wouldnt be hard to see either. monitor voltage at the wire and then right on the post while cranking.
