I liked the Altima SE at first, but the rear end is becoming less tasty now. OTOH, the Maxima's rear I am getting used to.
The Altima is nice. Drove it before the Maxima and it felt faster off the line. I didn't like the lack of HID in Canada, orange gauges, and less luxury. The possibility of better handling and acceleration didn't matter. I know my friends would think I am crazy to trade in my 99 Max SE for an Altima with questionable interior, no folding side mirrors etc.
On the other hand, if I was going to the Altima from an Accord, domestic, etc, that is another story

Buy a Maxima and you will see a lot of Altima 3.5 rear ends.

About SCC being a crappy mag... yes. Some of their earlier tech articles were interesting, but they have gone down hill. But, ALL the popular "import" magazines have. The only good magazine is Grassroots Motorsports and Car.

Comparison #'s mean nothing unless performed under the same conditions and equipment. SCC is the only independent test to compare both cars under the same conditions and guess what, the Altima won. The max is a good car, its just a little dated in the styling and needs an update. The next Max will most likely kill the Altima. It's just that the current one doesn't.
