what kind of dirt/stains you have? I would spot clean w/auto carpet cleaner then vacuum that area. I would just clean it with a towel moistened in a cleaner to avoid getting the headliner too wet.

there's only one dirty spot on the ceiling of my car and it's above
the driver side window. I'm pretty sure it's from a mechanic who must have touhed the area with his dirty hands but it's quite possible that it's residue from excessive cigarette and pot smoking.
either way...i want to be able to clean it without creating those fuzzy ***** you see on the ceilings of older cars.

Anyone else have suggestions?

Word of advice, consult a car care specialist like a detailer and see what they use. Maybe even consider getting a professional to clean it for you. Years ago I tried the same thing on my Pathfinder and totally screwed the headliner.

I have some tiny grease lines around the sunroof.. I found out that my wife's hair was being sucked out of the sunroof and sometimes the track grease was getting on it, leaving a thin black line when she pulled her hair back in
not alot, but enough to notice a spot or two.
no, I didnt point that out to her
and yes I now close it very carefully.

If you have grease spots then I would ask a detailer about it. If it's a dirt stain, then I would use the appropriate cleaner for it. I had a lipstick mark on the head liner, so yesterday I sprayed this carpet cleaner by Meguires and I used a dry terry cloth and rubed it. If you decide to clean it yourself, make sure that the towel is dry and that you turn it over (clean side.) You can see the stain set in on the towel. Read the directions for a better explanation. I checked the area I clean, and it didn't come off completely, but a lot of it did. I am going to go over it again and hopefully it will come off completely. On a side note, I usually leave pens in the cupholder and ink spilled and settled inside the cupholders. I used bug and tar remover and was able to get most of it off. I am just wondering if anyone has a better solution for this? Thanks.

My suggestion is to start with plain water (mildest) and start brushing the spot. If it does not do anything, add a little bit of whatever cleaner (carpet or upholstery cleaner) you decide to use to the water and start brushing some more. Add little bits of the cleaner at a time into the water. Reason being is that you dont want the cleaner reacting with the adhesive behind the headliner. If and when it does, you might end up with a sagging headliner. Just my 2 cents....good luck....

I applied this unidentified solvent to a rag, wiped gently and noticed that the area
I had wiped was now cleaner than the rest of the entire ceiling.
To rectify this I ended up wiping down the entire ceiling and now it looks brand spanking new.

Tuff Stuff, spray or foam. Works the best, and you don't have to dilute or anything. Just spray it on, let it soak for like 30 sec. then wipe with towel. You might need to rub a couple of different ways but it should work. I removed soda stains off of my liner when I first got my car.
