Horn stuck on. My DIY fix works, but is blowing fuses.
Horn stuck on. My DIY fix works, but is blowing fuses.
So my horn was stuck on constantly. the only way i was able to drive the car for the past 5 years was to have the relay and fuse out but i had no horn. i gained the confidence to make the fix.
I've taken dozens of pictures and videos over the last few days but these are the ones that matter the most -
Here is how the steering wheel looks without the horn: https://imgur.com/G5vLNfN
Here is how the back of the airbag looks: https://imgur.com/Qv9GedD
Here is what the upper inside of the airbag where the horn pad makes contact (at least think that how it works) looks: https://imgur.com/CsupHlN
Here are the 2 pages from the service manual that deals with the horn;

So i think it was and is a grounding issue, and think it's probably in the airbag/back of the airbag. if i connect up the battery and the horn connector the moment i put the airbag back in it's place the horn starts shouting out. after a lot of trial and error and experimenting i found out that if i wrapped up the torx bolts on the back of the airbag with electrical tape and use some o-rings to shimmy the torx bolts i could get the horn to work about 75% (mostly every time i press it and rarely sticking but if it did stick then another press would unstick it).
I felt good fixing something like this but then i checked the horn fuse and it was blown. i tried adjusting and new fuses and only putting fuses if everything was connected and only light tapping the horn once and no matter what the fuse would blow.
So now i'm back at square 1. i have no idea what to do but i do know my car's electrical system is worth more that a horn so for the time being i'm going to disconnect everything again but i really want to fix this up and i'm hoping some of you guys can help me or at least steer me in the right direction.
i've noticed that some guys would install horn buttons but in every case i've seen of this that was when their horn wouldn't work and the button made a temporary ground whereas my situation is different as my horn is always grounded and i'm not sure if a horn button with fix that.
and to further complicate things i think my airbag is also partially controlled by my horn connector harness as right now it's disconnected and the airbag light is blinking.
I really appreciate you all for taking the time to read and help me with this.

I had the same issue and the fix was pretty easy. I did a write up on it....
