Canadian Custom - Duty and GST

When I ordered supplements from the US I didn't have to pay any of these. Now, I received my Stillen RSB and Intake a few days ago and today I got letters from a Customs Broker. It tells me I owe $39 for my sway bars, and $21.62 for the filter. WTF?

That's why I always think twice before ordering stuff from U.S. Depending on the shipping company, the brokerage fee varies. I have found that the most economical way is to ship stuff via US Postal Service. You will only need to pay $5 for brokerage to Canada Post and GST on the cost of the item purchased. The downside is you cannot track the item if you have to. UPS is on the other extreme. I paid ~$50 Cad for an USD$ 90 item last time.

When ordering stuff from US, one would have to pay the USD price x exchange + shipping + brokerage + GST... cost an arm and a leg!

You got raped!

What is the GST rate where you live? Were other taxes involved? Duty should have been approx 6.5% on the item. What did they computer the entered value to be in CD$? In any event, something sounds way out of whack.

I do this for a living into the US, just not sure about specific percentages without knowing all details and info of the transaction.

I didn't get the paperwork yet, but they charged me 7% GST, %6.5 Duty, approx $70 broker fees, plus GST on the broker fees. I'm going to challenge that, as soon as the paperwork arrives.

If I get the thing right, you should have paid 359,81 $, not more than that (it depend more on the exchange rate, in this case 1.6234)....

Hey, this is normal procedure, when ever you buy stuff from the state, you have to pay a broker so they can clear custom your goods or you can do it yourself if you go at the customs office, the other amount is the GST which is base on the price showed on the commercial invoice supplied by the seller. There is ways to minimize your cost, first you tell your seller to identify a lower price on the commercial invoice they have to ship with the product. ie: I recently order a pipe that give more power to our car ( if you know what I mean ) and the seller just showed a value of 50$ so it only cost me 17$ at the end, cuz whenit come to very specific item, the custom agent sometimes dont have a clue of the real value.

Hope this help

Cheers
