Removal of Steering Wheel Audio Controls?

Has anyone removed the steering wheel audio control cluster? If so, what was the most painless procedure???

Can I ask why you want to remove them? I'm working on getting mine to work with my aftermarket deck rather than removing them.

Have you figured out how yet? If not, get hold of the PAC SWI-X controller from Crutchfield. It'll work. Mattattax is the first to have had it work on his 2k2.

I'm not sure how they wired it but it works--I think you may have to have a headunit with an IR remote though

I'd like to know too...

Mine is for a simple reason, though - I'd like to spend some time and actually add lights to the buttons. Shouldn't be to hard, right?

Yea I emailed PAC directly and got a response and wiring diagram that shows how it should be wired. I'll have my shop install it ASAP.

GOOD LUCK!

Since the control labels are just painted on and not translucent/transparent, don't see how you are going to get backlighting to work. Seems like a tremendous amount of effort for little gain.

True, but I wasn't going for backlighting. I intended to use white, flat LEDs or some electroluminescent 'tape' to shine light from the little rim on the side - using sort of a small fresnel lens to front-light them. It's a similar idea to what the Max has just above the ashtray/coin drawer - only a smaller scale!

Hey, more power to you if you can pull it off!! If so, I really would like to see some pic's.

I think you might be encountering some clearance issues though...since they are buttons, by definition there is veticle movement from the plane of the button surface, (i.e., need to be able to push them in a bit)...not sure how much distance you will have to work with under the lip of them, even with miniature wiring/devices.

I had my entire interior system redone with Pioneer stuff...door speakers, dvd/cd/radio & EQ. I also bought the Pioneer steering wheel mounted remote which is about the same size as the stock one but id would'nt fit in that space wher the other one was.
Theres a small panel on the back of the stock remote that you have to take off and then there are 2 philips head screws that are kind of hard to get to (you have to bend the plastic back a bit). Just unscrew those 2 and it come right out!
Only problem is that when you take it out, theres no cover to cover that big @$$ hole in the steering wheel!! You'll have to make one custom. Good Luck!

are you saying that removing these controls is stupid, like your statement suggests? It doesn't matter why he wants to remove them, I don't think that was the issue, I think he was asking if anyone has done it.

Its really easy to understand that OEM controls can be purchased and used for basic operations of aftermarket decks (its only $$), but he wants to remove the OEM completely.

Rick, come over tomorrow, we'll get it all taken care of. It sounds pretty easy.

Hard-wiring question!!

Man if there is a way to do this i want to know how please.

I have a sony portable mp3 cd player, but i have to connect it to the car with that cheap tape adapter... obviously from the cd player to the final output there is massive sound quality lost.. Is there a way to hardwire a lineout cable to the Bose system? anyone have any clues, tips,?

Springs are pretty easy, you need an alignment afterwards. You thinking about a "package" deal? hehe

I'm in the same boat as soundmike. I am buying Maxspeed springs but will need to have them installed when they come in. BTW I'm out in Katy so I don't have to drive far.

Sorry DTV, I didn't keep the email since I wasn't planning on doing the install myself. I think their website is www.go2pac.com so you can try there for the details. There is a tab with instructions on the web site that has the details you'll probably want to see.

Related Question

I just replaced the stock with an Alpine 7863. I don't particularly care about the stereo controls on the steering wheel, but now my trip button won't work either. Did the installer miss something, or is everything grouped together (all the buttons)?

On the 2k2 i don't think so. Matt(attax) only needed the PAC SWI-x adapter to make the trip and audio controllers work again with his aftermarket stereo.

I just installed a Pioneer DEH-P9300 in the wife's new 2k2 and it took me a lot of head scratchin to get it figured out. The Pac SWI-X adapter instructions weren't very clear, but they have updated the info on their website for the 2k2. I initially thought the brains for the trip computer were in the radio also, in fact I started to open the radio thinking I could salvage that section to reuse. After more head scratchin, I discovered that there are 4 wires in the connector that goes from the steering wheel to the radio - red, red/black, blue/yellow, and brown/white. To make the computer work, hook the brown/white wire to the ground, it needs it to make the switchs work (ground logic) in the steering wheel. To make the PAC interface work, the blue/yellow gets connected to a 150 ohm resistor that comes with the kit and the red wire gets connected to the 47 ohm resitor. The red/black doesn't get used for anything (or at least that I can figure out). Twist the other ends of the 2 resistors together and solder to the white wire on the PAC interface wiring. Connect the red wire on the PAC interface wiring to the switched lead and the black wire to ground. Program it for mode 3, then use the remote that came with your aftermarket radio to program the PAC interface module. It's really pretty simple once you figure it out and amazingly everything works. I had a tough time trying to figure out where to put the little IR transmitter, but I drilled a little hole on the left side of the pocket under the radio. BTW, the instructions don't say it, but the little plastic collar snaps off the IR transmitter if you use your fingernails to pull out on the 2 little tabs. Be carefull though, it will go flying and I just about didn't find it! If you snap the collar off, you can put it in from the front, then snap the IR transmitter in from the back and won't have to cut the wires.

I'm still having problems trying to fit the 6 3/4 Infinity Kappa's in the doors. My car didn't have a Bose radio and the factory speakers are made so the adaptor rings are part of the speaker. I had seen where someone posted earlier where they gutted the factory speakers and made their aftermarket ones work. That's fine for some, but I wanted to be able to put the old system back in the car if I trade it later. I talked to Tustin Nissan and ordered the speaker adapter rings for the Bose speakers (about $9 x 4 plus shipping, each one had it's own part number), supposedly they should work for at least the front doors. I think the rear door adapters may be too small for the 6 3/4's, I may try to see if the front ones fit the back and order 2 more fronts if it works out.
