I think to accelerate as fast in my Max, I have to NAIL it at WOT in each gear to redline, and shift as fast as I can between gears. That requires effort and a gout of higher decibels from my exhaust and intake, thusly causing my car to fail the "sneaky" standard. But it's still fast...
they are Fast... and unless you have a 5sp with Mods.... don't even think about it... you'll get a reality check... The CL-S has 260 HP with a 5sp AUTO. Granted they weigh about 200 lbs heavier than the Max... they got power. So if you have a 5sp with a y-pipe or better you could do well.
I am still looking for one that will race me...

Those CL-S's are nice cars. I love the 5 spoke wheels. I seriously considered the 3.2 TL, which is basically the same car as the CL, only a four door. I chose the max because I could get a 5 spd manual. Now, if they made a 3.2 "TL-S", the four door with the 260 hp engine, that would make me consider trading my max. I still prefer a 5 spd manual though, which isn't offered on the Acuras (yet).

I bought a CL-S and I love it
I actually ordered a 2001 5sp Maxima from a dealer in Houston back in August. After 3 months of sitting on my $500 deposit, they told me that Nissan pushed the car out to Jan 01.
I couldn't wait another 3 months so I went looking at other dealerships. Since I couldn't find a loaded 5spd Max in Texas, I started looking at Acuras.
Anyway, I test drove the TL, the CL, and the CL-S. The performance of CL-S made the decision pretty easy...it's a great car and damn fast. 260 HP, 232 torque, HID's, sport shift, Bose w/in dash 6 CD changer, auto climate control, preforated leather, and plenty of room in the back seat. As a Maxima lover, I gotta say the CL-S is sweeeeeeeeet.
I'm game if anybody near Austin wants to race. I wanna know how fast this thing is too...

SuperChargers to the Rescue...
That High priced Honda... The Acura CL-S... just to check my memory and PLEASE forum correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't remember seeing any Acuras amongst WARD's 10 best engine awards six times in a row other than BMW.
I know somebody's out their in Maxx land with a 2001 Max 5 speed with Supercharger connected that can put to rest a CL-S or any other S that acura can through, with the exception of the NSX... that we'd have to go the land of the rising sun to yank a twin-turbo skyline to put it in check. YEAH, YEAH, F'em up!!

I wanted one but the max was 5k cheaper plus i had nissan insentives. Otherwise i would be cruising in the Acura. Its right on par in performance with the 5 speed and has more amennities... Sweet car, dont knock it..

No kidding?!? Wow, a TL-S would be quite a sedan. I haven't read anything about it. If it happens, I will definitely go take a look. My father-in-law has a TL which I've driven a few times, and it's pretty quick. I also like the HID lights and available navigation system, two things I wish the Max had. I'm not sure if it has memory seats, but that's another thing I wish the Max had. One thing the Max has that the Acuras don't is the 5 spd manual, although the 5 spd "tiptronic" isn't bad. It'll be interesting to see if the Max gets the larger 260 hp motor next year. Either way, they're both great cars, and it's cool that we have so many choices in performance sedans these days!

yeah, the tl-s type will probably not have the hid headlights if they decide to go with the foglights???(I don't know why) However, my dealer here has confirmed a march arrival for the TL-s type (in fact they are taking deposits).
But from what I hear the Maxima is supposedly getting a 250 HP motor...but then again this has not been confirmed. I would take the Maxima over the TL since it is a 5spd and there is more seating room in the back...the TL was very cramped. But overall both cars are awesome.

CL-S
Right before I started looking at Maximas, I test drove a CL Type S. I had been driving a '96 Integra up until that point, so I know how well-put together an Acura is. Performance is amazing. It's an absolute hot-rod. The restyled back looks great, and the wheels and other "extras" are nice touches. The thing is, $32~33,000 is way more than I wanted to spend. In fact, my buddy had just gotten a great deal on a brand new Audi S4 for about $5000 more than the CL-S. So, that got me thinking that it wasn't the car for me.
Acura deserves respect because they build great cars.
But I love my 5-spd Max... $13,000 less, and ALMOST as fast!
(0-60/6.6sec for the CLS versus our 0-60/6.7!!!)

but not MY 2k Max (GXE 5-speed).
Most magazines rate the CL-S between 14.8-15+.
Although magazines arent always the most accurate.
Considering i ran 14.9 100% stock & 14.8 w/ a K&N + 18's...
I would have to say that it would be a great race...
and I'm sure I could take one out...no doubt.
I drove one before buying my Maxima...
Whoever said they're "sneaky fast" hit it on the nose.
They dont FEEL that fast...Handle like a MF'er outta the box though.
PS: The CL-S is not overpriced. You get ALOT for that $31k.
Actually get ALOT MORE than the $35k Max AE...I.M.O.
My dad's gotta cl type-s and I have a 97 5Sp SE with Ypipe/Exhaust/Suspension. We're about neck and neck forever and then I'll pull away at 100+.
Also, the Maxima bose is much nicer than the CLS, and the climate control seems to work better. With the CLS I find myself constantly adjusting it +/- 4 degrees to get comfy.
I don't think there is enough room in the back of the CLS for adults.

I seriously considered the CLS
I seriously considered both the CLS and the IS300 before purchasing my 2001 Maxima AE 5sp. I previously drove an Accord Coupe V6, so I was pre-disposed toward the Acura product. The engine in the CLS is nothing short of amazing: smooth, strong, torquey and quick-revving. The individual who described it as "sneaky fast" hit the nail on the head: in no time at all you're at some serious velocity.
The factors which lead me away from purchasing the Acura are as follows:
1) No stick shift. Even the best "manumatics" (and the one on the CLS is very good indeed) fail to replicate the driving dynamics of a stick shift. My only complaint about the Accord was that it was boring to drive. The CLS is less boring to be sure, but still fell way behnd the Maxima in the "fun to drive" category.
2) Styling: While the interior is very well-executed, the exterior styling is utterly bland. I appreciate that styling is very subjective, but to my eye, the CLS didn't look much different than a Toyota Camry Solara. In fact, I found my Accord to be decidedly more attractive from all angles.
3) Kinda BIG for a two door. A few inches longer than the Maxima, in fact. I don't get the reason for this. I find the Maxima to be as large, in terms of external dimensions, as I could possibly go. A two-door sporting coupe that was even bigger just didn't make sense.
If Honda ever gets over it's inability to provide a 5 or 6 speed stick shift that can handle the torque of it's fabulous v6 engines, I'll forgive the CLS all its flaws and buy one in a heartbeat. What a motor.
Cheers,
Jaeger

Reality check
Being that we're all Maxima fans and love our cars, I don't want to burst anyone's bubble, but let's face some magazine performance data:
ACURA (Motor Trend)
2000 3.2 TL (~$28K "base"): 6.7s (0-60),15.2s@93.1 for the 1/4 mile
2001 3.2 CL-S (~30K "base"): 6.4s (0-60),14.8s@96.5 for the 1/4 mile
MAXIMA (best magazine times)
1995 SE (auto, C/D magazine): 7.3s (0-60) 15.9s@87 for 1/4
1995 SE (5 spd, MT magazine): 6.6s (0-60) 15.2s@92 for 1/4
1998 SMX supercharged (5 spd, ?MT mag? unverified): 5.9s (0-60) 14.4s@99 for 1/4
2000 SE (5 spd, MT magazine): 6.7s (0-60) 15.1@94.4 for 1/4
2000 GXE (auto, MT magazine): 8.1s (0-60) 16.2/85.9 for 1/4 (and yes, that 8.1s for 0-60 is correct)
Now, for an automatic Acura (5 speed), those are seriously fast cars for stock automatics. Just mash on the gas, and their automatic's programming will easily allow them to repeat those number easily. Now if you've got a 5-spd Maxima, you'll have to have perfect shifts every time just to keep up with the 225 HP 3.2TL, and probably some mods as well for keeping up with the 260 HP type-S Acura 3.2CL. If you have a stock auto Maxima, like me, you may as well throw in the towel before the race even starts.
I love the Maximas (being a previous owner of a 3rd gen SE as well before getting my 4th gen), but I think we should be realistic about what our cars can and can't do against our competitors.
