To paint or not to paint....

My 01 f'd up black auto looks like a POS. I've tried taking it to different dealers but they said rock chips are not covered under warranty. I also have numerous amount of f'n scratches. I was shocked that only 2 people sent letters to Maxima-ness to try to get Nissan to recognize that their paint sucks. At this point I don't believe Nissan will fix any of our paints, so I can either:

a. repaint the whole car....I was thinking of a lighter blue than the magestic blue or a very sparkly silver. Probably cost me $3-4K (Does any one know of a great paint shop in the bay area.)

b. (my car is fully paid off)trade car in for a 2002 base 6 speed Max or a 2002 3.5 Alti 5speed and take a $2k hit on tax again.

c. say the hell with Nissan, don't give em another penny and try to find a used GS400.

What'cha guys think?

If you trade for a 2K2 stay away from black or majestic blue or any dark color for that matter....2K2's seem to have the same ole soft nissan paint......im glad as hell i have sterling mist....may be a common color but at least the chips and scratches dont show as bad as on dark colors........just my 02 cents. I got my 2001 Sterling Mist SE repainted in October. The paint job looks great and I don't have any chips yet. The best part was that I didn't have to pay for it since my insurance company did. The company painting the water tower by where I work oversprayed their industrial paint on a windy day and my car was coated with the stuff. So it was a win/win for me. I had tons of chips and one ding before the new paint job.

I agree about the crappy paint and the front bumper area is the worst part of it. If you don't get splattered bugs off within about an hour of them hitting your car then they are there for life. I've thought about just getting the front bumper repainted but don't want to be without my car for a week just for that.

Yes the front end of the Max since 95 is its weak point as far as paint goes. I wouldnot repaint the whole car unless its necessary, repaints just dont have the look of a factory job and you will most likely have other paint issues with other parts of the car. Just repaint the front end.

Trading a 2k max with paint probs for a 2k2 with paint probs makes zero sence Sorry. And come on if you can get a gs what the hell are you asking for And if you don't have much invested in the max, i think you answered you own q

I agree max'n out, trust me they havent made any improvements to the paint, I can just go look in the garage and see that vs. my old 2k1. My 97 is the same way sitting next to my 2k2

You forgot about D: 4 steps compound would bring back the nice shinning color, I did it once and I couldn't believe it and it cost like 150-200$. You can have the stone chip fix and your car will be beautifull again.

Cheers

Re: To paint or not to paint....

Max,

Yes the Nissan paint sucks and the chipping is BS.

I've had the front end of my 2K SE repainted (grey lustre) and am very very satisfied. It was repainted last summer and only has one small ding (not chip) in the paint has occurred since. I drive on the highways every day and now I don't feel as if I have to drive several hundred feet behind other cars to avoid rocks that may be tossed up by them.

I'd vote for you to have the front end repainted and talk to the paint shop prior to allowing them to do the job. They should be able to set you up with paint that is far my durable than the Nissan's "thin coat".

Good Luck

Unfortunately, the front end is not the only problem. There is numerous swirl marks all around the car and numerous scratches on the all the doors.
