Rattles on 2002 Maxima....

I noticed the other day that some rattaling(clicking noise is comming from the front dash). It has been cold here in Boston, so it seems to rattle more now. I am kinda upset that the brand new car will rattle right away.
On my 2000 Maxima that I used to have, there was a discussion here a year or so ago about the A-pillar rattle on the passenger side. I am think that it is the same thing again. Seems like the clicking noise is coming from there.

I can't belive that Nissan couldn't fix that problem in 2002 Maxima.

I will see if I can try to fix it myself.

Anybody else have rattles 2002 Maxima?

I dont have this problem, but I still fail to understand what in the A pillar could be making that noise.

About A-pillar rattle

The problem that many 2000 Maxima owners had was that A-pillar plastic cover on the passenger side, where it is meeting the dashboard was making a click and poping sound.
So I am thinking it is probably the same thing. Cause the car(2002) is practically the same as (2000).

I will see if I will find something on it.

if you pop off the a-pillar cover...

or even take a min to peek at the TSB, its pretty easy to understand why it rattles. its less clear as to why they cant redesign the part or spent the 5 cents worth of foam when assembling the car.

I am also getting a strange rattling/tapping noise as if something is loose from either the dash or evenoutside the cabin.

I live in the Boston area and it also seems to happen when it is colder. I thought it was a problem with the front number plate with ice having got between a part of it and the bodywork, but I didn't see anything.

I only hear it in the mornings though, so maybe it is tempersture related?

Ya...I have a rattle in the little overhead console. It rattles where the map lights and the sunglasses holder is. Not sure how to fix that one either...

My 2k SE had a rattle (and still does) from new and is coming from the right dash vent by the window. If I keep air going through it this seems to stop it. Also in the summer when it is warm it is quiet.
I didn't want to let the dealer touch it figuring it would get more screwed up.

Yeah...I think Nissan has a problem there. I as well experienced the same problem on my 2000 GLE and now and 2002 SE. Whats up with that?

I've got a 2k1 and I have the same problem......annoying as hell.
Are you guys telling me all I have to do is to open the a-pillar
and make a little adjustment?

I have the same problem, mostly just when it is cold. After the heater is on for awhile it goes away.

Re: Re: if you pop off the a-pillar cover...

TimW, had a good picture a while back how to fix that A-pillar rattle.

Basically you need to stick piece of foam into that place where A-pillar meets the dash. I did it on my 2000 Maxima and it fixed it up.

I didn't try it on my 2002 Maxima yet. It just sucks that new car already has rattles, plus Nissan knows about the same problem on 2000 Maximas.

This is why I'm concerned about trading my 99 Accord in for a 2k2 Max: The rattles!! Despite being severely underpowered, my Accord is as quiet as it was the day I bought it(with the exception of my A'PEXi WS exhaust). My Y2K Quest SE has an annoying rattle eminating from the B pillar and this is what I'm concerned about in getting the Max. I was hoping that Nissan would have addressed this but (according to you Y2K Max owners) I guess they haven't.

Go for the Max anyway, my rattle seems to have gone away and if you upgrade the stereo you'll never hear it anyway. It is a minor problem which is totally outweighed by the positive points.

Like the picture in your signature. Is that James Thompson when he drove for Honda in the BTCC? Can't wait for this years season to start.

Re: Re: Re: Re: if you pop off the a-pillar cover...

I need to find that post that TimW posted about the fix for A-pillar rattle. He has some pictures there too.

On my 2000 Maxima, I actually didn't take the A-pillar cover off, I just put some foam where the A-pillar cover meets the dash. It fixed it.

I didn't do it on my 2002 Maxima yet. There is a TSB on it, I am just debating if I should go to the dealer for that. I am afraid that they can damage something instead of fixing.

I removed A-pillar....guess what? I drove my car for a while without it and clicking-ticking noise WAS STILL there
TSB about this problem sucks!
I put some foam in there, but why...I don't know...it makes noise even without a-pillar attached.

Anybody?! Professionals? Help!!!

I have this too, pulled of the cover and still "ticks", I'm wondering if its the glass? I just can't find anything there that explains the rattle. Its not the wiring or clips that run up the pillar.

I had the same feeling - the glass (windshield). I had somebody to drive my car, while I was listening....and "the sound" comes from the windshield...
strange, but...no other place

I feel like I am taking part in group therapy right now... Its not just my imagination! There really is a rattle! It is such a minor thing, but I am way too perfectionistic... I will cram some soft fluffy stuff in there somehow and see if that helps... I could be a lot worse. Everything else in that damn car is as tight as a drum...

Mine only has a cracking noise on cold weather which seems to come from the center console vents area. The plastic used to make the surrounding area of the vents seems susceptible to temperature changes. Other than that I have none, but my car is still "young"... 2300 miles and counting...
