You know what guys, 5th gen. are noisier than 4th gen.
My brother has a 98 SE, and I have a 2k GXE.
and his is quieter than mine. (I'm talkin about the engine sound, by the way).
I think it is because the 5th gen. have the dual stage intake.
I like the way how the 4th gen. acclerates so quitely.
I call it the "silent pull".
I wish my 2k was a little quieter.

Am I the only one who feels this way?

I can't even remember how my car sounded without the intake, I'm seriously considering going back to the stock airbox...

If you think your car is loud I suggest installing an intake, driving with it for a few months, then put the airbox back in. I can guarantee you car will seem more quiet than you could ever imagine, hehe.

It might have something to do with the timing chain...but probably not much different. 95-99 had a timing BELT which are actually slightly quiter (but not as reliable) as the timing CHAIN the 2000+ Maximas have.

I purchased the 2K Maxima thinking it would be quieter or at least as quiet as the previous model. But it is significately louder.

weird... I bought it b/c it was quiet.

If I was looking for a car with soem get up and go, would have bought another car... specifically was looking at new cobra when I was shopping around.

The 4th gens have timing chains too. The VQ in the 4th and 5th gen are nearly the same except for the dual stage intake.

My 4th gen was silent when I had no mods and it's still silent at idle. There is absolutely zilch vibration from the motor either.

Worlock, the 4th gen had a timing chain - not a belt. I had a 96'SE traded for my 00'SE and I also agree the 00 is louder, but it seems to come from the exhaust more than the engine. I have a stock airbox w/ K&N filter in it. I personnaly miss my 96's power off the line, the 00 seems to "lag" a little from a dead stop. The 96' also shifted ALOT crisper at full throttle, I'd like to hear of a 4th gen v/s a 5th gen fom a dead stop - would be interesting. I think the 5th gen would take it from 60 mph on but the 4th would get it off the line? But I will say the increased torque in the 00 is SOOO SWEET, not as much downshifting accellerating on the highway.

Just my opinion

I can still remember when my car was silent and engine was smooth at idle...

For those of you who think the Max is a little loud for your taste, I have a little suggestion...

Trade it in for a 1986 Cadillac Sedan DeVille Broughm

Thats a quiet car. j/p

All I have to complain about is excessive road noise from the Toyo's. Really loud! I like how the engine sounds 4,000rpm onto its 6,100rpm shift points.

Yep and nope

My 96 had a quieter engine but lots more road noise.
Defintely more jump off the line(both 5 spds)
2K is heavier by ~300 lbs? too lazy too check.
The 2K is smoother but either intake or engine mech noise
is much louder.
And yes the Toyos(16") BLOW BLOW BLOW!!! And at 200+ a pop
from dealer no way The engineer who spec'ed those tires should get a good butt whipping. Any Michelins or Dunlops would have been much better, and cheaper.

Hey don't get me started its too early

My 2K SE 5sp is quieter than the 97 SE I had (which was stolen) But I preferred the growl of the 97, it was a sportier sound and I was less likely to turn the ignition with the motor running
