Bose Speaker Upgrade?

I have run a search but have not quite found the answer I am looking for.

Does anyone have details on how difficult it would be to put component speakers in the factory locations (A Pillar and door) while Maintaining the Bose Stereo? Is the resistance of the Bose speakers 1Ohm or 4Ohms, I have seen both using search. I want to maintain the factory head unit, but will most likely replace all speakers, and try putting a larger free air sub with amp in the rear deck. Don't want to spend much but didn't really think that the BOSE sounded too great.

Where is the factory amp for the Bose radio, is there a built in amp for the front and rear speakers, then a separate amp for the sub? Does anyone have a wiring diagram for this?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Bose Speaker Upgrade?

You may want to check out the car audio/electronics forum. I've picked up quite a bit of knowledge from those guys.

Never thought of leaving the 5 gen forum. It is a scary thought but I will venture outside of my safe zone. Thanks for the advice.

I don't see what year your car is, mine is a 2003. According to the advisor at Crutchfield there is one amp in the dash, seperate from the radio, that powers up the door and pillar speakers and a seperate amp for the subwoofer. I know from looking that the sub amp is mounted to the underside of the rear deck, to the right of the subwoofer. I didn't ask and don't know if you could hookup an aftermarket sub to it or not.

To me if you are getting some nice components you will want to get a amp forthem cause running off the Bose head unit it ain't going to feed that much power towards them, and the rear woofed is okay but not great and wouldn't run a bigger or more powerful sub on the amp in the back..Good Luck though

taking the door apart was easy. I did it in my sentra and figured it was gonna be about the same. waddya know. The same, just a bit more heavy due to leather/pleather and being bigger.

Bumping an 8 year old thread?!

Crutchfield doesn't know what they're talking about. In the 5th and 5.5 gen there is ONE Bose amp under the rear deck that powers all 4 interior speakers. No amps in the dash. They might be talking about the in-line crossovers that split the hi/low signal for the tweeters (A-pillar)/midrange (door). There is another amp that is mounted ON the sub that powers the subwoofer alone.

If you want to add in a subwoofer, you have to find the line level signal wires going to the subwoofer, tap in female RCA's, then run a male/male RCA to the amp. Alternatively, you can also tap RCA's into the line level signals coming out of the Bose HU, and run a full set of RCA's from the dash to your amp. I suggest this because when you decide to change your HU (it happens more often than not), your RCA's are already run for your aftermarket subwoofer.

NO LOC's are necessary.

Get the car, and replace the radio with aftermarket. Makes the Bose sound significantly better.

Agreed. Did that with my 626 and the improvement was night and day. Sounded like I replaced the entire stereo, not just the HU.

replacing the whole system, for future on-lookers, is the only way to improve on the bose sound

Absolutely 100% DISAGREE.

Changing the Bose HU only (to an aftermarket unit) makes a SIGNIFICANT difference in sound quality. Granted it won't be as good as a full aftermarket system, but it definitely brings out much more untapped potential of the Bose system.

The subwoofer has a 100w amp built in that black cover on the bottom of the woofer!

I wanted to put my kenwood hd545u in for my blose stereo but the headunit made by clarion by the way is 4 or 5 volts and my kenwood is 2 volts so maximum volume will be reduced and the speakers are 1 ohm so u are gonna need to probably run any aftermaket speakers directly to your aftermarket head unit I mis my 5th gen without this weird *** blose system wat was clarion thinking

No, you just need a line output converter with your Kenwood deck.

Please use punctuation. I had to read your post 3x to understand it.

What I did several years ago is replace just the factory tweeters in the A-pillar with 4ohm tweeters from infinity:

http://www.crutchfield.com/p_1081011...speaker&tp=107

It was a direct fit and really improved the dynamic highs. Have not had any issues with the change.

No, reading/comprehension > YOU, I stated nothing about Ebonics or slang, I said use punctuation. Your post was one long run-on sentence.

Using the icon - real classy.

If it suits your needs, sure. It has 4v preouts so you can use the Metra 70-7551 for install. If you're buying from Crutchfield ask them to provide this harness for you instead of the 70-7550.

This.

However, some people are satisfied with the stock speaker sound, but prefer a different head unit. In which case, Metra is the way to go.

For an all around better upgraded sound though, replace HU and speakers and rewire. Can't wait to tackle this project soon (both are being shipped from Crutchfield as we speak )

Replacing the HU only is a perfectly viable solution for many.

Yes, the Bose system sucks, however when the HU is replaced, it actually makes the rest of the system sound better. Ideal for those looking to upgrade incrementally.
