What is revolving in RPM?

If RPM is revolutions per minute, what exactly is revolving?

Crank. The valvetrain typically revolves at 2x the crank speed.

RPM (revolutions per minute) is the engines revolution rate in a given gear. In otherwords the # of times the crankshaft revolves in one minute in a given gear. I am not sure that is what you are looking for, because it is rather basic, but it is a start.
