Amsoil, Mobil 1, Nissan, in that order. Forget anything else.

Actually, Fram is not as bad, just bad rap. In the end, most are ok but the construction of Amsoil, Mobil 1, etc,... are pretty good. Even the Wal-mart Supertech is good. But product I believe in is the Fram X2. Definitely, up to par with the best in construction. It has great efficiency and really 70% more capacity than the rest. I know because I am involved with filter media development and testing. Only thing is I have yet to find that filter for the max in the store. Using it in my 00' Camry.

At first I thought this response was an April Fool's joke but I guess you're serious! You're the first person I've ever heard say that Fram was up to par with the best. Do you have specific data to support the construction comments. What does capacity gain you if the media lets stuff through? Efficiency doesn't mean much either if you're talking 20 micron or higher ratings; how efficient is it in the 10 - 20 micron particle size range? Just interested in your background with Fram because every other comparison on the 'Net shows Fram as being near the bottom of the bucket. Don't know about you but Walmart's brand can't be much better than a base Fram model. Looking forward to your response....this could be interesting.

Do a search on oil filter comparison and check out the details there...there are several solid filters that are a step or 2 below the Amsoil/Mobil level for about half the cost. I recommend a full synthetic over any synth. blend but that's my opinion....I believe the level of true synthetic in those blends is very, very low....

As far as oil have done a lot of research and am using Mobil blend 5W30. I'm sure you'll find many org. members satisfied with Mobil1 Synthetic but that is not my choice. Lots (and I do means lots) of data indicate that Full Synthetic is best for engines ran under high heat and pressures. I did not find any conclusive evidence that could justify to me spending $5-6 per quart of oil. The way that many people justify spending that much is by going longer between oil changes(not very wise choice at all). Again, you'll probably get thousands of opinions on this. One thing is for sure, change it about every 3,500 miles and you can't go wrong. Good luck.

dude - why don't we just sticky everything and close the forums down. That way there will be no need for anyone to waste their time expressing their opinion....

I think (not positive) the Wal-Mart Supertech filters are actually STP filters, so they should be a little better than Fram.

My opinion: Synthetic Blends are a total waste of money. If you want the benefits a synthetic provides, by a full synthetic. If you don't want them, just buy a high quality conventional oil.

EddiexAhn: If you'd like the prices for Amsoil oil and filters, just shoot me an e-mail and I'll quote them for you.

Planning to do my first oil change today. I'm going with Nissan OEM filter and 5W-30 Mobil. For my next oil change, I'll go with 5W-30 Mobil 1. I used to be a Castrol GTX fanatic and it is a pretty good dino oil (never had to rebuild an engine or had to deal with oil consumption at all), but it seems to build up excessive sludge in the engine parts with time.

I just bought a Purolator oil filter in Pep Boys ($3.99). It's slighty bigger than the Nissan OEM. I will be using that one in my next oil change. Go to www.pureoil.com for their application chart.

You can drive yourself nuts figuring out which are the best filters and oil to use in your car. In the end you just have to go with what you're comfortable with, can afford and fits your life style.

If you want the cheapest, consider store brand oil and filters like Walmart's Supertech, which are pretty good filters made by Champion Labs, and change it every 3,000 miles. Or let Jiffy Lube do it. There's a lot to be said for this approach. Look at what Consumers Report had to say once: http://www.xs11.com/stories/croil96.htm

If you want a middle of the road approach, buy a name brand oil and regular filter. Follow Nissan's service schedule. Nissan's filter aint bad. Your car came off the show room floor this way didn't it? Here's a write up on the oem filter: http://www.motorvate.ca/auto/maxima/...oil_filter.htm

If you want the best, go with blends or synthetics. People who do this often buy better filters with more dirt holding capacity like Amsoil, Mobil 1 or PureOne and extend the oil drains somewhat to offset the higher cost. Who knows, maybe they're right. These usually are better engineered products. But the debates are endless, consider the following site: http://www.geocities.com/bustav13t/oilinfo012602.htm

Or, you can print off my post, pin it to the wall, and pick up a dart.... Good luck.
