Is there anyone who has a Y-pipe and removed the resonator but left the Stock muffler? I really like the sound of thicknes exhaust system but she has the factory Y-pipe. Would an Aftermarket Y-pipe change the sound by much? How does it sound without a resonator in the cabin at criusing RPM - like ~3000. The fourth gen should sound similer since it is basicaly the same engine, right?

I don't know about the y-pipe. When I did the resonator mod I left the stock y-pipe. Cruising at highway speeds the noise inside the car will be about the same as it was before the resonator was removed. The only time you can really hear the difference inside the car is at idle and at lower speeds and RPM's.

Greddy EVO with stock y-pipe = nice!
Greddy EVO with aftermarket y-pipe = LOUD!

I have a Y-pipe, Magnaflow resonator and stock muffler. The combination sounds aggressive and there's no drone.

Yes.

A very popular, overpriced catback system. Look here:

You really think so? I actually liked that oval tip for some reason. I was kinda disappointed that they changed it for 2k2. Although now that I look at the new Max, the new tips do look a lil better.

I just got the 2k2 last week. This thread has been around the block a few times!

This sounds interesting... just one more question I hope you don't mind. I want a nice low tone... but the growl part makes me a little leary. Would say it is more a BMW type low growl, or more like a Camaro SS type growl?

I really want that BMW low tone... but don't want intrusion or droning in the cabin.

Thanks much

I suspect the lowest exhaust tone you can get on a Maxima . . . or any other vehicle for that matter . . . is via a Flowmaster. I've never heard a muffler that produces a lower exhaust tone than a Flowmaster. The problem . . . if you consider this a problem . . . is that you're going to have a car that sounds like you're running a V8!

If you don't modify any other part of your exhaust system, you shouldn't have a drone with a Flowmaster or any other aftermarket muffler for that matter. The stock Y-pipe and resonator absorb most of the exhaust noise before it even reaches the muffler.

I would say it is more like a Camaro SS/Mustang GT growl but not quite as loud. It will probably be hard to get a low growl out of the V-6. You can hardly tell a difference in the cabin. You'll only notice a little extra sound at low speeds. The best part is the sound when you first crank up. The V-6 really sounds like is coming to life.

If you really want a Musclecar Growl, you will have to drop a V8 in your car, the 2K2 motor produces a nice deep tone, nothing ricey, but it wont quite sound like a Mustang, or Camaro.

I know it's been a while since this thread started, but what size tips are those - 3"? Do you recall the inlet size?

Thanks!

I'd like to know this to, so I can change the tips to a little larger. Not ricebowl large, just a bit.

I think I'm going to try out a flowmaster muffler running the stock y pipe and resonator...Not sure about what series, though. 40 is really loud and harsh....Hmm..maybe delta flow. Anyone have flowmasters on their Max?

I've had a little experience with the flowmasters, not on a max, but on trucks. I had the 40 series delta flow and my buddy had the classic 40 series - mine was actually much louder than his, but sounded much more 'solid' or consistent I guess. For a car I'd definately recommend the 50 series, probably do the delta flow.

When is someone gonna record their exhaust, so we don't have to imagine!

I have a 2k2 and also want to "toughen" up the exhaust a bit. There are so many different ways to go though. We need sound clip posts!
