no u dont just the pop it in the hole it is a different size i need to take apart plastic around the automatic shifter but i cant the take out the ashtray piece and im not talking about the storage compartment im talking about the whole piece

1)Follow the "How To" sticky for my 2K2 shifter console install to remove it from the back through the front.
2)Buy a T-shaped tool from a parts store, they usually only sell it with a new lighter socket though, to push in the two plastic tabs holding it and remove through the front.
The second option is easier if you can get the tool.

If it won't come out by pushing in the two tabs, you'll have to try the tool. You have to push in the North/South tabs at the SAME time, while pulling just the metal portion(NOT the black plastic piece). Once the metal piece is removed, it should come free, but then again, I did it withOUT the tool and with the console removed.
If you have an autoMAGIC then my directions won't help remove the console, but it will help remove the socket.
