Since I've been appointed Dr. Dash here's a pic of the apillar fix.

1/4" round foam caulk backing rod..

stuffing
<img src="http://www.adpub.com/dash1.jpg">

almost pushed in out of sight.
<img src="http://www.adpub.com/dash2.jpg">

Why does the sound return? well, I think the foam collapses after about 2 months. it will often fall through to the floorboard. I will try some rubber based fix next time. Felt seems to make scratchy 'felt noise' in the cold when it rubbed together.

As for the radio... mine was installed slightly crooked... and the sides of the radio touched the dash. I isolated the problem by sliding some thick paper in the crevice until I found the corner making the noise. It was the upper corner, so I popped the vent, loosened the two screws, bent the bracket ever so slightly until the unit was centered. it goes without saying that i tightened the screws and replaced the vent.. but I guess I went and said it anyway

Now, turn your head and cough... The Dr. is out...

I got it at

Home Depot in the Maxima Rattle Reduction Dept. no really, its in the same aisle as weatherstripping stuff.

I think the real permanent fix tho is it affix 1/4" hollow rubber adhesive backed weatherstrip. But that would require the removal of the apiller. something I really dont want to do. stuffing anything down there will let you know if thats the origin of the rattle. Some folded up (thin) cardboard would do the trick for a day or two. Wont look pretty

I fixed it (I think)

I went to the local Home Depot and picked up some Frost King Tubular Vinyl Gasket 1/2 wide and 1/4 thick....cut off a piece and tuffed it down towards the dash....It fits but I really had to horse it in there...plus its white and it looks like a cigarette butt stuffed in there

I think Tim has the correct fix and that is to take the A pillar off and pit some adhesive strip in there...just needs to have some cajones to take the A pillar off(I've heard it is real easy to break the clips that hold it in) Also TimmyL said on another thread that he got some of the foam stuff and stuffed it in using a dull butter knife....proably a good idea since I used a small screwdriver and being the dumbass I am and put a few small marks in the A pillar a bit Not bad but did just the same. Will get some darker foam tomorrow.

I also could not fit any foam where Tim shows in his pic...too tight..my noise came from towards the dash so thats where I put the stuff.....of course when i took it for a ride to test it the first time my dash started to buzz like crazy........friggin figures Went out after supper and the buzzes were gone so.....who knows....A pillar noise is gone for now bit I hear all the other rattles from the glovebox and the rear deck twice as loud now!!!

Re: I fixed it (I think)

Hey guys - I had this problem and isolated it a little higher then you all did. I slid a piece of foam about 4 or 5 inches up from the dash on the front of the a-pillar - eliminated the squeak all together. Only thing is you have to slip it in there by moving it up and down. Eventually it will work itself in and stop the rattle. I had actually tried a technique similar to yours Tim - but it didn't help, (in my case). This is just another suggestion.

What do you mean by you tried Tims method but it did not work? Do you mean that you had to place the foam farther towards the windshield than Tim shows in his pics? I could not get foam in where he shows due to the tightness...I had to place it way up the front near the windshield...

I just want to make sure we are talking the same thing here and you dont have some magical fix I'm missing

Re: well, now my driver side pillar is buzzing

Hey Jn and Tim - I put slid it "UP" the A-pillar (so to speak). The part I am talking about is where the windshield meets the pillar about 5 inches up from the dash. (Not towards the front like I think you are asking - its actually on the pillar itself). You have to kind of cut a piece about 3 or 4 inches lengthwise and then work it in by moving it up and down along the corner. The foam I slid in there is just regular ol' joe foam. The foam separates the trim from the windshield just slightly. I think what it is actually doing is causing the pillar trim to pull up on the clips a little - giving some tension. This is keeping the rattle quiet, but it only seems to work for me about 5 inches up. From what I have been reading, the dealers are popping the pillar trim off and sticking foam behind the pillar. Funny thing is, this car's dash/trim rattles more then my 1992 300Z with 85,000 miles on it.
