They didn't have a 5-speed GXE on the lot at the time. If they had, I'd be driving a GXE.

I bought a greddy because I wanted a greddy.

Well I cant justify spending $550+ for a Greddy catback when I can get custom 2.5 inch piping for $100. a muffler for $100(perhaps OBX or something similar)and installation for about $65. Total cost 265.

The whole idea is to let your car breath better anyhow.

I agree 100% it might not be as good as the greddy but Im not gonna spend twice as much money for the name and perhaps an extra 1/2 of a horse power. Everone knows Maximas(95-01) only gain about 5-7 hp from an aftermarket catback anyways.

and yes you can say well the greddy will go 10 years with no rust or no problems but I highly doubt I will have my Maxima that long anyways.

money or status

Anyone who gets their "status" from a car is shallow. A car is a tool. A bit better than a club, but still just a tool.

Status is retiring on 5 million $$ at age 55. You dont get that working at Burger King and buying rear sections for Maximas.

One of these days when I'm bored enough, I'll post a completely off topic poll and start a three page discussion topic with no other purpose other than to flaunt my percieved intellectual superiority.

I don't think you've got the perceived status yet!

I made an assumption in a previous thread that may or may not be correct. I assumed that, when it comes to purchasing parts for their Maximas, people in this forum are more interested in achieving status than in saving money. I'd like to put that theory to the test.

Let's assume that you had made a decision to purchase a rear section for your Maxima. We'll also assume that you had narrowed your choices down to either an HKS rear section or a custom-built rear section based around a Magnaflow Stainless Steel muffler. I'll also stipulate that your funds are somewhat limited and that there are other things you'd like to purchase for your Maxima as well (e.g., FSTB, RSB, intake, rims, tires, etc.).

Let's go on to say that both the HKS and Magnaflow rear sections will be professionally installed and that they both look good, sound good, and perform identically well. (I have thus removed performance and esoteric issues from consideration.) The only difference is that the HKS costs more than twice as much as the Magnaflow (including installation). However, the HKS carries a "brand" name that confers upon its purchasers a degree of status that the Magnaflow does not confer.

Which would you purchase . . . the HKS rear section or the Magnaflow rear section?

Re the initial assumptions and conditions – it shows how far we have strayed from the original "hot-rod" roots of modifying our cars where some knowledge and "sweat equity" was part of the deal. Limited funds and future mod desires I'm familiar with. But both of the options as described fall into the category of mods done via plastic/checkbook/wallet and somebody else's know-how and effort. Where's the satisfaction in that?

Maybe I'm a little too set in my ways, where the performance result is primary and the required thinking and fabrication is a significant part of the appeal of doing the mod. A generally neat appearance counts, but "sizzle" doesn't make the list. Snob appeal makes my other list (pretentious things to avoid) and I feel no pressure to advertise what I've done to those who don't notice and/or can't figure it out for themselves. For an exhaust system it's far too easy to break out the chop saw, fire up the MIG welder and build up my own for less than any $ number yet mentioned. It would be unique (so I wouldn't be seen as a mindless copycat), and it will probably sound just a bit different as well (I'll probably even know why).

BTW, I abstained from the poll. Either one is too much money, neither one is much fun.
