HID theft prevention - part 2

HID theft prevention - part 2
Ok.. I've been procrastinating.. but I will order the $150-175 worth of tamperproof bolts and special bits on Monday. I think enough people have shown interest to take the 20 'kits' I'll have.
in the meantime, I've noticed that you can drill a hole and install a door pin switch on the cross member, so that if a light was tugged on, the alarm would sound. In fact, I think it would sound before the light was broken if adjusted correctly.
Those two pin switches would ground, that ground can be fed to the hood switch, hence setting off the alarm. HOWEVER, the hood switch is water proof, and I assume for a reason. I'm looking for a suitable switch.
Hopefully, I will finish this before mine are swiped :/

I'm paranoid and thieves don't care, so
Would the HID theft kit fit the regular Halogens that came with the 2K/2K1's ?
thanks

Yes, it will work with the regular halogens. The kit is simply some bolts with rounded heads and different thread to make it hard for people to unbolt the lights. Unfortunately it doesn't help if they break the brackets to remove the lights.

I'm working on this...
Thinking of a VERY permanent adhesive T (think the bottom part of that T with a hole in it, like the latch on a gate). with safety wire or zip ties.
You couldnt break the brackets by pulling directly out, you have to lift up, which snaps the brackets. If you can stop the light from coming out of the lower clip, they wont be able to pull them free.
What they do after that is questionable

good news..
I scored a serious discount!
I will have the bolts in 2 days. I am lining up some washers and my secret ingredient, some backing bolts with thread lock. They will never see them under there. NO possible way of turning that bolt. well, not without ALOT of time. and special tools.
I'm off to the hardware store to see about some special retaining brackets for the housing clips.
I already have some HIGH tensil aircraft quality safety wire. This can be run under the lights, around the bottom clips and secured easily so that they cannot be pulled loose and the brackets broken.
I will try this in the next day or so. if it works, I will include 2x3ft of this wire in the kit. I'll snap pics as well.
As it stands the 'kit' will be $15, 4 of which is just usps priority shipping. I have 2 ended L-shaped "allen key like" wrenches and regular 1/4" bits coming.

I think your idea of coming up with a way to prevent the white clip from leting go will prevent the theft and minimize the damage more than the bolts. At least until they get ****ed off, but hopefully the trigger switch will scare them off by then.
Good work!

I'm still in on this deal. Kudos for thinking this thing through. Hopefully, we'll all get the 'kit' soon and sleep a little better at night.
I'm supposed to visit a friend in San Antonio in a few weeks and I keep putting it off until I can get these HID's secured. Do we contact you or are you gonna post when you get the stuff ready?

I have bolts and bits in hand..
I need a quick trip to the hardware store for some secret sauce. I can start sending kits by the end of the week.
I'm talking to our bookkeeper to see if the company I work for will take CC's for me. Prolly tack on another buck or two to cover those damn merchant fees.
I should have the rest of the parts tonite, with pics. and an address to send some money..

Tim, just wanted to bring up a point >>
It's great of you to do this, but I think the small chance exists that, one of the guys you distribute these to might well be a theif him/herself. If only there were a way to screen them...

I will have pics
but I will not show the patterns. There are 4 different keys. Think box, star, hexagon, triangle.
GeneK wants his bolts Fedex and he happens to be close to the mfg, I tried to just arrange for him to just pick some up, they don't allow that. And you must be a business to purchase. Its not that easy to get the keys. They are metric patterns, they couldnt tell me what distributors in NYC even carried metric. None in Little Rock or TX stocked them, all special order for metrics. Plus even if they did, you can't buy just a key (supposedly), you also need $100+ in bolts.
I'm sure there is a way around all this, but its not easy. Thats all we can hope for, is to make it alittle harder for the amateurs. You simply cannot stop the pros. Even the pros will need *alot* more time to remove the lights in one piece. As it is, even if the alarm was tripped, they would be gone before you got there, or mall security made another pass.
When you put an alarm on your car, you are simply trying to make it less desirable to steal than other cars.
I really dont have the answers to what they will do - give up or smash. $15 is not alot to tip the odds back in your favor.

If you were a victim.
Guys who had there lights stolen .....Sorry about that again. Can you tell us if top brockets of the headlights were broken or it was a "clean steal"? I'm trying to think of other ways to secure headlights based on how it was stolen, other ways then self-destruction mechanism.

But what you have to take into consideration, is that most of the time, if they're only smashing and grabbing, they really only want the ballasts and the bulbs.
They're pretty valuable when sold on Ebay to people to retrofit into their headlights (Mostly OEM projector retros).

sure...
that takes time.. ALOT longer than just taking the whole thing. I suspect they are taking the whole thing at trashing the rest.
I'm sure *some* people want ballasts and burners, but not that many. A hack ballast and burner is crap in a regular light. And good for a few tickets.

Those two pin switches would ground, that ground can be fed to the hood switch, hence setting off the alarm. HOWEVER, the hood switch is water proof, and I assume for a reason. I'm looking for a suitable switch.
Hopefully, I will finish this before mine are swiped :/
