Actually I didn't ask.. I told him I had a 2k2 and inquired about NOS...he replied that the only thing he would have in the near future would be cams. I just assumed 5th Gen...

I get the feeling the 2K2 motor os pretty well put together , and while I want to think a CAM upgrade would net me 20-30 HP, Im not so sure either......Then again, Im not as familiar with the inner workings of the VQ as I am with the Ford 302, and GM 350 ....

It will be expensive and also hideously complex. It would be something for the Stillen or JWT to do unless you have a spare daily driver and want to spend 2 full days with a shop manual. Then if you set the timing wrong your valves could smack your pistons and ruin the whole motor. I fantasize sometimes about how sweet it would have been if Nissan had made a 3.5L I-6.

You are absoloutely right. I put a B303 Cam in my 89 lX, and that was not a walk in the park. You guys that are GEARHEADS like me, know the process ( I OWN A MAXX, RELAX! ).. I can imagine a 4 cammer ! I will pay of course, but, 4 Cams will cost in the 1K range and up, and the install, I could just imagine what a specialty shoplike Stillen, Or JIMBO WOLF, will charge ! I keep leaning to NOS as the solution to my M3 problem. I say, Headers,Ypipe, my current mods, and a 75-100 shot, and im a happy 2K2 owner !

what is the 350Z supposed to put out? 280 HP?

people have been wondering what gives the 3.5 VQ in the Z that extra 35 HP over the 3.5L in the maxima. many people have suspected that the Z will have hotter cams and that could be one difference that could lead to some extra HP. any input on that?

they can play around with the exhaust...I wouldnt touch the cam too much if I am nissan...it might fail the emission, esp with tougher spec in US.

I e-mail Cattman about the same thing, a few days ago. He said they are making cams right now for the 5th gens. Should be available w/ 3-4 months. Looks like one way or another we'll get em.

The cams might be a hotter profile, but the 350Z will also have variable timing on the exhaust cam too. The Maxima and Altima only have it on the intake cams.
People at the Freshalloy forums have been making noise about direct injection too, but that might be a little too far fetched.

Good point about the varible cams for the exhaust. That's how the BMWs get crazy hp out of their M3 motors. Direct ignition might not be that far fetched. In Japan it's a fairly normal thing now. It gives maybe 10-15 more hp and about the same for fuel enconomy.

The direct fuel injection thing would be great for the 350Z's power output, though. I was checking out Freshalloy's engine database thingy and the VQ30DD(direct injection version) makes 250hp! If Nissan used a VQ35DD, it would be hard for them not to get at least 300hp.

I thought the Alt/Max had variable timing on both cams. I would be willing to bet the compression in the 350Z is higher and the y-pipe/exhuast is freer flowing.

No...250. I wish they got 350hp out of it! I'm just saying that if they can get that much out of the VQ30DD, imagine a VQ35DD!

Crap. It would be damn near impossible to make our VQ35DE's direct injection short of swaping the motor out. Cam's however are a distinct possibility, I remember someone saying that the VQ35's utilize a relatively mild profile.. I'm thinking there's power to be gained there. If not then aftermarket altima and Z stuff will hopefully bolt-in..

If those 4 cams are " MILD "..then there's a definate possibility of major gains !
