4th Gear Problems w/ 6spd

Has anyone has any issues with shifting into 4th gear on their 2K2 SE 6spd??? It seems as though the synchronizer it not working correctly between 3rd and 4th because it doesn't feel the same as the other gears... it's difficult to get it to shift, more so when you're running through the gears quickly (accelerating fast). Any ideas? I have had 3 other manuals before, and have NEVER felt this.

I have no problems going from third to fourth. BUT, I often do have problems going from 4th to 5th. Sometimes it just won't go. I have to pull the stick back a little and almost work it in. It sucks when you are not expecting it and are in the act of releasing the clutch and have to quickly depress it again and work the shifter into 5th. I am going to buy some Redline and hope it improves it.

Yeah...I've got the 4th gear problem but mine's not bad at all. It's just a little tighter but not bad enough to effect my shifts. I put in Redline MT 90 last weekend and it really smoothed things out. Now all the gears are butter smooth except for 4th. It just feels like I have to pull it through a detent of some kind. Put in the Redline though, you'll like it.

What is up with all these 6spd problems. I think that when the 2k and 2k1 were released, not nearly as many people complained about the 5spd. I am seriously considering trading in for a 2k2 6spd but not if I keep hearing reports like this.

If I'm not mistaken the previous Maxima's (00-01) and the 4th Gen models all had a direct linkage shifter which felt a lot better. The direct linkage in my 99 feels great and I've never ever come even close to missing a shift.

The 2k2's and all other VQ35 Nissans have a cable shifter now, though. Cable shifters feel a lot different than the direct linkages, so that could explain what you're feeling.

I'm not having any troubles with mine so far, I can hit all the gears with equal smoothness. I was worried before I took delivery of my car at the end of January because of some of the reports I was hearing about 6spd problems, but 3800 miles and no problems so far. It was a bit notchy at first, but that was gone within the first 1000 miles.

Chance makes a good point. Give it a chance to break in awhile. Maximas are just getting loose about the time other cars are wearing out.

already broken in

7 thousand miles, and 4th gear has been the same since I purchased it. I originally had a problem shifting into 6th, but that eventually went away. I would have thought that the problem with 4th would have dissapeared sooner since it's used more. Anyway, I'm having a Nissan tech drive with me this afternoon to see if they can finally figure out what's going on.

Also, my clutch pedal makes a sqeaking noise when you let go of it now... just started last night. I have always loved Maximas (owned a '95 SE) but now I'm really leaning twards trading for a 3.2 Acura TLS.

Yep, that's the issue I'm having with 4 on mine. A tech that used to work for a dealership here in NC (now works for an independent Nissan service place) drove my Maxima this morning. He noticed how notchy the shifter was and the difficulty shifting into 4th. He also commented about the clutch pedal noise. He said it feels like the gearbox wasn't machined properly at the time the transmission was assembled. I'm hoping that the dealership can fix the problem this time. I'm my opinion, I shouldn't have to buy Redline oil to "help" out the problem. If I spend close to 30 thousand for a car, I expect it to run like it. The dealship should fix these kinds of problems, if not... they need to buy the car back. Just my two cents

4th gear on my car is very smooth, it's the smoothest gear of them all.

4th is the worst on my car. Every other gear is like butter (including R). I really do believe it will loosen up over time. I just got rid of my wife's Solara and the gearbox didn't loosen up unit about 40k miles. That gearbox was crappy and the Max feals like a Bimmer in comparison. If you don't gat satisfaction from the dealer (doubt you will), spend the $20 on the MT90. It will protect better than the bulk stuff they'll fill it up with when they try to fix the problem. My 2c.

Gearage

I have no problems with mine. I have MT-90 in there and it is smooth as a baby's bottom.

Re: Gearage

I just turned 6k on my 2k2 6speed and have always noticed that 4th gear and occasioanlly 1st gear feel a little less smooth than the rest. This has however gotten much better since the car was new. As others have pointed out, this is a cable-shifted 6speed, and so it does require a more "precise" throw of the shifter than the older models. Also Borg-Warner trannies have always been known for being idestructible, but not always buttery-smooth. Of the B-W trannies I've driven, I still think the 2k2 6speed is one of the smoothest. Just my humble opinion.

Man oh man.. you guys are scaring me, i haven't even taken delivery and already there are 6 speed problems??

Are these related tot he build dates of the cars?? Do you guys have the helical limited differentials??

When i test drove the first time on a 2k2 6 speed i noticed that sixth was fairly hard to engage!

Well i hope nothing is wrong.. i streched my budget to get the 2k2 because originally i was goin to buy a protege 5....
