Question???? Matrix wooping Max any year!

How's this a guy at the local service station says his Toyota matrix yeah the station wagon will burn any max even the 2002. I call BS! He said it comes with 180hp stock and the thing is light as hell. He claims any day of the week he'll race me(2000) or my bro (2002) and blow the doors off of us. What do you guys think? I am looking up stats right now.....

Here are the stats:

1.8-liter DOHC
16-valve VVTL-i
4-cylinder
180 hp @ 7,600 rpm
130 lb.-ft. @ 6,800 rpm

Front engine, front or full-time 4-wheel drive (full-time 4WD available on Matrix and Matrix XR only) And weighs in at about 2700-2800 lbs.

a celica GT-S with the same engine, 6 speed tranny, and less weight runs anywhere around 15.0 flat (+/- a few tenths). maximas can hang with those times. matrices can probably give some (esp auto) maximas a good run, but never blow the doors off of us.

Thats what I needed to hear! I thought there is no way this ***** could blow the doors off me. Plus his is completely stock. He was talkin all this power to weight ratio and all that jazz. I didn't know that the Celica has this engine. Come Saturday I will take him out! My suspension will be in too.

I don't think the Matrix would stand much of a chance...unless he's got the 6speed AWD model. Then from stop it might be a challenge, but otherwise, no way...

There is a 6sp FWD 180hp model, auto AWD 130hp model, 5sp FWD 130hp model and auto FWD 130hp model. There's no way that the Matrix will win.

There is a 6sp AWD model, at least thats what a friend of mine who works at a Toyota dealership told me. From what he said, it's very rare, but it is being sold in the US.

He's got the 6sp AWD. From a stop I got him beat for sure! This is his first stick car...and I am on my 4th! In the bag for sure.

Yeah they're rare alright, they're so rare that 4WD isn't an option on the 180hp version of the Matrix at all. The 4WD is only available on the auto's not the manual. As far as a Matrix beating a Maxima is concerned, I don't think so. The Celica has a hard enough time staying with us and when they do it's usually only from 0-60 not a highway race. Plus the Matrix weighs more than 300lbs more than the Celica. So I highly doubt that a Matrix will give us much of a challenge. Hope this helps clear up any confusion. Look here for the Toyota Matrix specs.

The 180hp is not available with the AWD. Period. And if if was I wouldn't fear that 130 ft-lbs of torque.

Because I was tire kicking and when my Solara (previous car) was in for service I took a look at the Matix. You quote Toyota Canada's website but no where in there does that combination (180 hp/AWD)come up. In Toyota's own 2003 literature that combination is not available. Show me something that says it is.

My cousin has the 180hp fwd 6 speed matrix. It has decent power but is very tiring to drive as you have to work the hell out of the 6 speed to keep the car in its powerband (6000-8000rpm).

Low 7's 0-60 isn't bad but you have to rape the clutch to launch it properly...

It does it does it does! Now that's out of the way...I like the Matrix style/concept. It's tight in every way, but after seeing a few in real life, the backend is too big, round and high...kind of like Roseanne's backend...

Motor Trend results...

'03 Matrix 180hp
7.26sec 0-60mph
15.67/91.97 qtr. mile
60-0 114ft!
BS 100%

Maybe, he was coming on to you when he said he could blow you and your brother's doors off.

here's the PDF of the configuration of the Canadian Matrix

http://205.150.151.212/NWS/media/pdf...rix_spec_e.pdf

scroll to Page 4 and you'll see that the only engine option for any of the AWD versions is a 123hp@6000rpm 118lb-ft@4200rpm engine. only tranny option is the 4-speed auto.

from a few Canadian reviews (i.e. Carguide, Motoring 2002), the loss in power vs. the non-AWD version is due to the crimping of the exhaust in certain sections to accomodate the AWD components

just my $0.02

cheers

This guy with the Matrix is obviously very cocky.

Yes, the car has a good power to weight ratio and performance, but almost ZERO torque. The powerband is so narrow that even the 6spd is barely enough in those cars and even then it still falls out of the powerband on some shifts.

If he's saying he could "blow the doors off" of a 2k2 Max then he's just asking for it.

SMOKE HIM!!!!

I'd probably murder him on the launch with all of the VQ torque, but he might start pulling on me up top with all of the top-end in that car. It'd make for a good race. 00-01's would probably do better, and 2k2's no comparison.
