MPG on Trip

I've driven my 2k2 on hgwy for a couple of hours straight and locally (live in nyc) yet the MPG reading never goes above 16.5. If i'm driving on the hgwy with no traffic and doing 80 for 2 hrs, you would think the trip would register a MPG reading of more than 16.5. Any opinions?

On my trip back from Indiana I averaged above 24 MPG the entire time, with one tank netting me 26.45 MPG. I was at these numbers.

24 is the best I got so far, from a trip to LA...otherwise, 22-24 on average daily driving.

It all depends on your driving habits. If you have a heavy foot, you'll be getting about 16-19.

I'm pretty sure that i drive the same way most people on this site do!

I can understand 16mpg for the local driving in the city (it's hard to get beyond 3rd with all the stop signs and lights), but after driving for a couple of hours straight on cruise control in 6th, it just seems wrong.

FYI, remember to reset your MPG computer by holding down the TRIP button when the MPG is on the screen.

I only offer this, as I recently rented an '02 auto. When returning the car and topping off the tank, I was surprised by how little gas I used in three days of driving. We got a little better than 25mpg, and I stomped on the skinny pedal every chance I got, all weekend. Like the previous post, either you are figuring wrong, or there's something wacking going on. Good luck!

Why would you possibly think you would get good mileage doing 80mph?

your right that that at a speed of 80 it isn't at the best rpm, but my point was that no matter if i was on hgwy(long) or local the mpg trip fluctuates only by .1 to .5 mpgs and doesn't go above 16.5.

The trip computer is off at least 4 mpg but even 26 is good at that speed, was the ground flat?I have gotten 32.8 on the trip going around 58 mph, of course you will get killed on the highway driving that slow on it.
