Brake pedal clicking sound

I have a 2001 SE and the car just started having a clicking sound when depressing the brake pedal. You can hear really well when the car is stopped and in park. It sounds like the clicking is coming from the center console. Does anyone have any ideas on what this can be?

thanks

I had the same problem with my 97. Five years later, the clicking noise is still there. No fix. Dealer couldn't hear it/reproduce the problem, so it's still here.

yes, this is perfectly normal. you have to depress the brake to move the shifter out of park. it clicks over when you depress the brake far enough to shift out of park. the maxima just has a louder click than most other cars. this is completely normal, nothing is wrong, and you get used to it after awhile.

for me, the problem was a small pebble embedded between the calipers. try checking if the sound originates from the wheel well.
