The REAL fix to Bose rear deck rattle- rear seat belt
The REAL fix to Bose rear deck rattle- rear seat belt
Before I get started, I want to preface this by saying that I RARELY have backseat passengers.
Last week I velcroed the rear deck lid to the deck. That did not help with the incessant rattling at all.
I dismantled my ENTIRE rear deck today after being totally fed up with the rattling. I removed each piece one at a time and sound tested for the rattle.
The problem: The rear seat belt. The thing has a crappy ball bearing or something in it that rattles like crazy. I removed it- which getting under the seat was a total nightmare- but PROBLEM SOLVED!
I only have two seat belts back there, but I could care less. Also, while I was back there, I removed the three child seat strap holders as well. This will not only provide me with less weight, but will also give me additional incentive not to knock my girlfriend up.

[**** CAUTIOUS] You are modifying oem saftey equipment. This exceeds the bounds of factory specifications and could cause potential safety risks and possibly lead to death [/**** CAUTIOUS]
But who cares, good for you man, i hate those damn rattles!
The rear seat belt? You have to be kidding. Which one did you remove? Middle, Driver Side, or Passenger Side? And is this on a 2K2? I put weatherstripping BTW the rear deck and rear glass, and that seemed to help a lot.

Yanked it. If you hold the seat belt and shake it, it kinda sounds like a baby rattle...but quieter.
I literally have NO rattles now. I am considering going with a couple of 15"s.....

I swear. Middle seat belt. Rattled like CRAZY. First, I tried silicone around the plastic bezel. Then I scrapped the bezel and siliconed the hell out of the bracket. Then I got screwes that were much wider to hold it tighter. Still did not work.

youre lucky your problem was so simple to solve. mine is rather mindboggling. i cannot for the life of me pinpoint where the hell the rattling is coming from! ive narrowed it down to somewhere around the deck itself though. try this: open your trunk with the bass turned up all the way and have the radio on a r&b station and you'll hear all sorts of rattling in the trunk compartment when you stick your head in there. ive fiddled around trying to hold things, press on things, but still, nothing stops rattling. im one of those guys that tends to be concerned about taking things apart that i didnt put together so im a little hestitant about taking my car apart. i will do it eventually though... hahaha... when i get pist off enough.

Oh, also, there is a power cord of some sort up there thst I zip tied to the deck. That might have been rattling too.
If all else fails, go for the Dynamat.

I have to agree here, that it's most definitely not the seatbelt. It's metal pieces inside the rear deck and trunk, along with loose pieces, and the deck hitting the rear glass. In general, the only real solution is to buy that foam from Stallone's Demolition Man and spray it in the back of the Max to make everything truly solid. I love how BOSE puts their name on this system and doesn't even bother to get it set up with music other than John Tesh or classical. Ugh.

Thanks

1. Fold down rear seats.
2. Pop off Bose speaker cover and 3 child seat harness covers. Pry out the plastic housings for the child seat stuff too.
3. With trim panel remover, take out the six black plugs and paneling.
4. CAREFULLY remove the 4 screw type plugs holding down the rear deck. With a Phillips screwdriver, turn counter clockwise 1/4 turn until the head clicks out. With flat head screwdriver, pry it out. The whole plug should come out.
5. Pry up the rear deck. The seat belt has a bolt and a screw/bolt holding it in. Take out both screws.
6. Now the hard part. The seat belt is bolted in beneath the seat. WIth a wrench (Same size used on the big bolt on the rar deck), remove the bolt. It is a nightmare to do and a ratchet seemed to work best.
7. Once you have the seat belt out, you MUST reconnect the rear passenger side buckle, since the middle belt and the pass buckle are on the same bolt. You also MUST buy a thick washer to replace the space that the removed seat belt took up on the bolt. Otherwise, the bolt will NOT go back in all the way and could pose a SERIOUS safety hazard for the rear passenger.
8. Reassemble and enjoy your tunes.

Cool I was just about to try and isolate the problem too. I rarely have rear passengers and if I do tough luck! So you took out all the seat belts, not just the "plug into thing" I don't know what you call it. Cause I saw those white boxes for the belts. I don't have a bose set up so i will just take all seat belt equipment out.

I can still have two backseat passengers with seat belts- just not a middle one.....which is fine because I ground out like CRAZY when I have three people back there anyhow.

any updates on the rattle probs??
I, too, have spent weeks cussing my car out due to rattles from the rear.
I finally have narrowed it down to the trunk lid. Fortunately, the rear deck is rattle-free, at least for now.
I removed the trunk lid carpet liner thing and it got a bit louder, so I know I'm in the right area. I have a good solid hunch that the metal bars which are used to pop the trunk open when opening with the KEY, are what is rattling. It is the only thing I can find which is metal on metal and is loose enough to rattle. I've had 2 people lay in my trunk while I drive around and BOTH of them said it's definitely coming from the trunk lid. One also mentioned my shock tower is making a very faint noise as well, so I will tighten that down again just to be safe.

You've got to be kidding me, this thread is 2 years old. I'll answer it for you since I know him personally...
He sold that maxima, the 2000, probably 6 months ago, so I'm sure his raddles on that one, if he had any, have been past on to the new owner. He now has a 2k2 6sped, which you see in the pictures. He has built several systems for it and dynamatted I believe, which is the answer that EVERYONE goes for, if you have rattles, dynamat!
