Raced an SL600

I wasn't paying attention and thought it was an SL500. I also wasn't sure if he was gonna go or not so I didn't bother launching my car. Well.... he went! He took an immediate 1 car lead upon takeoff and increased that to about 2 cars early in 1st gear. That's when I noticed the V12 and SL600 badges! During the mid to late part of 1st gear I made up about 1/2 car. During the lower part of 2nd gear I gained another 1/2 car and towards the end of 2nd he took back another 1/2. So that's a loss by about 1.5 cars. I don't think he nailed it off the line so even if I had launched I don't think I could beat one. I could probably get within 1/2 car of one though in a race to 60mph and that's not too shabby, IMHO.

Cant believe you found a 600 that would race. Most SL600 drivers are Geritol infested goats, that couldnt step on it if they had a 50LB brick in their foot....

True... this guy was young... definitely under 40. I saw the guy look over at a C5 that was in front of me. The Vette turned right giving me the chance to get whooped. I REALLY should have known he was gonna run. Oh well...

personally, i dont think he was giving it his all. that car has close to 400 HP.

i wish i could give some input to compare....
me, my friend in his supercharged prelude and a 3rd friend in his dad's SL600 went out to race a few times late at night. it was mostly them 2 racing so i had to be in back on the 2 lane highway. i never got to race the SL600 myself. ill definitely race him sometime this summer.
though, i did race the S/C prelude and won both times

hmm...lol i know most big benzes and big BMW's had the autobahn in mind..so high-speed crusing was more of a priority...but damn..i guess that V12 has power to spare...id just love to take that to....160...swfitly...hahah imagine Crusing at 160 and its totally silent inside..with the double paned glass..must be nice

per edmunds.com:
389hp
402tq

BUT.... the SL600 weighs 4455lbs. So that's roughly 1200lbs more than a Max!! I mean... yeah... 400hp is a lot.... but so is 1200lbs! I've always heard the SL600 is just barely faster than the SL500 due to the extra weight. The SL600 is 300lbs heavier than the SL500 and I bet that 300lbs saps up the majority of the V12s extra power.

yeah, i agree that 1200 is a whole lot of extra weight.

but on the 500 vs 600 note...i dont think 300 lbs will cancel out the extra 87 horsepower that the 600 has over the 500.

Doubtful...

I am sorry to say that there is no way that he was on the throttle all the way. My dad has an SL600 and it will get up and leave a maxima, Sorry dude! Good try though.

i agree with you when you say the SL600 wasnt totally on the throttle. i said the same thing earlier in this post. but taking a closer look at it...

the SL600 at 4450 lbs has 11.4 lbs to HP
the maxima at 3250 lbs has 12.7 lbs to HP

its really not THAT much of a difference. i dont think you should have gained ground on him at all if he was at full throttle but i dont think he would have left you more than a couple cars behind.

If it was a C5 coupe, he could have easily done the WOOPING himself....

have u driven the new ZO6, i mean damn those things are relentless. it just doesnt stop pullin. u can feel all the torque below 3500 rpms, but damn as soon as u pass that it just explodes, i want one bad. dollar for dollar 50grand isnt much for a car thats that fast.
even if u mod a max to the fullest it will never be able to touch that thing is stock trim. one one person i know of that can take 1, and that max is worth alot more then 50gz, and thats furbiss. oh and by the way that vette runs 12.4 stock! so i hope no1 post any stories about how they kept up with one, not with boost or the juice or both for that matter.

Well, to be picky, I didn't say it would cancel it out, I said it was just barely faster. I remember reading something about the V12 only being a couple tenths faster than the V8. So that makes sense that the majority of the extra power has been sapped by the extra 300 lbs. Basically, if you're gonna spend the extra $40k on the V12, don't do it for the performance because that's a pretty crappy deal!

I think gearing had something to do with me gaining ground. Maybe I wasn't in the bottom of 2nd... more like the middle. I'm sure his 1st gear was taller so he would have hit 2nd after me. When he was at the bottom of 2nd I was probably in the middle of 2nd hence having a little bit better power-to-weight ratio for a second or two until he got into the meat of his 2nd gear.
