Tire Replacement Question

Hi, Everyone!

I have the stock 16" wheels of the 2001 SE, and it's time to replace some tires. Nobody seems to really like the stock tires, and that includes me, so I'm for sure not going to do direct replacements.

That brings up the question of what is the best-bang-for-the-buck tire for the wheel? I don't want to spend too much, but I don't want to go cheap either.

Thanks in advance!

There are so many factors to consider

you mentioned some tires, do you need 4 new tires? What's the weather like in your region? that would help in deciding if you need an all season or a summer tire. What kind of budget do you have? you can get 16" tires ranging from 75 to 175 a piece. Have you thought about maybe an 18" package(rims&tires)? it would be a nice upgrade over 16's. I would recommend you do some research with the search function. Some of the fourth gen guys still have their stock 16's and you could get some good tire reviews.

I live in Las Vegas, so it's usually dry out here. For my budget, I would like to keep the cost at somewhere between $100 to $150 per tire.

I've been wanting to upgrade to the 17" wheels, but I'll have to wait on that as my current budget doesn't allow me to mod my Maxima out of her current state. Someday...

Thanks again.

I can say this about Kumho ECSTA 712s;

they're pretty cheap, $112/tire with free shipping from discounttiredirect.com in my size, 225/45/17. 16s may be cheaper.

You get a Y rated all season performer.

My experiences shows that the Kumho sacrifices a little dry performance to make the wet perfromance better. The dry performance is still much better than wet, but compared to other tires, like my Previous Pirelli 7000SSes, the dry grip is a wee bit less. Other than that, they're great!

Well, after doing a bit of research through a limited number of sources (tirerack.com, discounttiredirect.com, and Costco), I've come up with the following list of possibilities:

Goodyear Eagle HP Ultra Plus ($97; W-rated) - seems to be an average tire by the reviews

Bridgestone Protenza RE92 ($131; V-rated) - I believe some of you have these as your stock tires (I have Toyo); not very highly regarded

Pirelli P6000 ($118; V-rated) - is there a difference between the P6000 and the P6000 Sport Veloce?

Yokohama Avid V4 ($91; V-rated)

Michelin Energy MXV4 XSE ($135; V-rated)

So I would knock off the top two listed above. How about the P6000, Avid V4, or the Energy MXV4 XSE? Opinions, anyone?

I would love to get the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S, but at close to $200 per tire, that's going out of my price range.

Thanks in advance.

I have the Yokohama Avid V4's... Only about 4K on them, so I don't know long they will last, but so far so good - they ride and handle pretty good... I might try the Kuhmo's next time...

I would definitely vote for Michelin all the way. Personally I've tried the Pilot XGT Z4 and they lasted 65000 miles with a treadwear rating of 320. My friend has the Pilot SX that lasted for 40000 miles with a treadwear rating of only 180. My roomate has the Energy MXV4 that was driven totally flat for about 6 miles and the tire survived.
