How do I keep my car from bottoming out?

I was taking a group of friends to lunch (4 people in car including me) and when I went over a speed bump in the parking lot (at very slow speed) the rear bottomed out. This is the first time I have had this car loaded with this much weight in back. Would new springs or shocks prevent this from happening? I suspect that it would only be worse if lowered.

making ANY adjustments to the suspension will only make it worse.

Yep, the car has stock springs and struts. Of course, one of the guys in the backset stands 6'5".

I had three guys in my backseat and I have a big sub box too. Probably close to 600 total pounds back there. And my car is lowered. We went over a speed bump and I seriously thought that a gun went off in my trunk. It was so loud. I got out to see if any parts were laying there and it was fine. I took it REALLy easy the rest of the trip, but it made pounding noise the whole way.

yeah if you change your shocks you're only going to make it worse.

Yeah and a couple of dead hookers too...... Got a problem with that?

Actually, no, it was just a very loud noise that resembled a gunshot.
