i believe your answer 100% but im curious...i thought the #s after the "series" # represented the size of the engine:
325 = 2.5L 3 series
330 = 3.0L 3 series
528 = 2.8L 5 series
etc....is that not true?

Up to 290-ish now I think. The updated version of the engine for the 745i has Double-VANOS and puts out 320+. Not sure if that's in the 540i engine though...

A 540i 6 speed will take a 2k2 6 speed, but a 2k2 6 speed will take a 540i auto. Oh, BTW no such thing as a 528i anymore as they are now 530s. The 325i has returned for 2k2 (was previously a 323i).
You can't tell the size of a BMW engine by the model number all the time. As mentioned previously, a 540 has a 4.4L and the 323 had a 2.5.

Well when you look at the modifications that have been dyno'd so far for the Maxima- pulley(9hp), intake(10hp), cat-back(5-8hp) and add them up you're looking at around 280hp for a 6spd Maxima and soon with y-pipe and headers we will be over the 290hp mark. So the BMW's will be less and less of a problem. And when you look at the options and the price of the Max, why would you drive anything else.

j/pSeriously though, it seems the 540 and the 2k2 6-speed are EXACTLY evenly matched. 14.3@97mph is about right for both cars.. I mean someone's gotten 14.2@99mph so it's not entirely improbable that the 2k2 max could beat a 540 in the quarter mile. On the freeway, the 540 would probably pull past 130 if it weren't speed limited
Due to displacement alone.Kloogy: JEEZ MAN! You've had your car for less than 3 months and you already live in a maxima down by the river..

On the 325i model I believe they revised the intake manifold and did some exhaust work (taken from the 330i engine I believe) and the extra power is the difference between the 325 and the 323.
