About a week ago my CEL came on while driving and when I got home I re-tightened my gas cap(for a good measure) and reset the ECU and the light went away.
Today the CEL comes back and I went to autozone and hooked up an OBDII reader and they tried to read the code... scanner goes through the systems but doesn't come back with anything. I got a hold of another reader - same thing, no codes I hit the "clear" on the reader and the light goes off. So it would seem that there truly is no code set since its apparent that the reader works/interacts with ECU.

Is there such thing as "volatile/non-sticky" codes on our cars ? Anyone has any ideas on what it might be ?

 

I went to 2 Autozones to decode my SES and both came back blank. They used a no frills Actron codereader.

Either take your Max to an indepedent garage for a small fee or buy your own codereader that can read Nissan codes P0XXX and P1XXX.

 

Small fees generally run around $60.00 in my neck of the woods, BBarty. And where would one locate a code reader that's self-contained, doesn't cost too much, and is capable of reading Nissan codes P0XXX and P1XXX?

 

Do you have any experience with this ? I.e. other readers being able to read codes when autozone can't ?

The codereader I bought does all you mentioned. Its manual includes all generic codes and the most common enhanced codes from the top 6 car brands. It won't tell you how to fix the problem but then your talking serious money. The Equus website has an updated "decoder" for all other codes and brands.
