FLOWMASTERS on a MAX

I need some input. What do you guys think about putting FLOWMASTERS on a Max. Personally, I think it will sound pretty sweet. I doubt anyone has ever done it but let me know if you have.

I think it's a Magnaflow, read that somewhere a while back.

Flowmasters sound great on a V6 . . . very deep and very mellow . . . but they make a V6 sound too much like a V8 to satisfy me. Some people, however, may think that's terrific!

You'll need a Flowmaster to get close to that sound on a Maxima.

Yep, my exhaust sounds amazing most of the time.

But kids, the fact is we will NEVER sound fairly close to a relively big block V8. On the way to the doctors today we were behind a 95-98 Mustang GT 5spd with fat wheels, stripes and I am guessing mods because his exhaust was loud. It sounded soo awesome, like a dragon...our 3.0 v6's can't sound too close to a 4.6L V8.

My system sounds like a mini mustang GT with a lesser, lighter/higher rumble.

Nothing, IMHO, beats the sound of an American muscle/pony car V8. (some exceptions such as turbocharged/supercharged japanese V6's and porchse H-6s sound awesome, but in a different way)

Be sure to get a "3 chamber" Flowmaster, not a "2-chamber."

I had the "2-chamber" Flowmaster on my 3.2 litre SHO, and it was way loud!
The "3-chamber" adds the extra chamber to mello out the sound at cruising speed.

My advice...take out the resonator and leave the stock exhaust.
Much cheaper.

I was just saying I liked the rumble of V8's

A Pushrod v-6 like the GM 4.3 liter V6s sound like v8s with a 3 inch flowmaster system. A friend of mine has it on his Chevy Truck. It sounds awesome.

How much did the full setup cost you? I've got the SC in my 5th gen and I've been wanting to attract more attention with dual exhausts and some V-8 rumble.

Search...(I finally got to say it!) there's been a couple threads recently about that. There's pics and instructions.

What series Flowmaster muffler would you guys recommend then? Or if you actually have the flowmaster, which one did you use?

Craig Mack has dual exhausts on his 4th gen. He recommended the Flowmaster 60 series.

i've been looking to do this for awhile, and will probably finally get to this summer. 2.25" SS mandrel bent piping custom made to a flowmaster 50 series. should sound awesome, especially with no resonator. if i get the ypipe, i'll probably put a resonator back in though...

Excellent choice, Ironlord. But I'd suggest you install 2.5" piping instead.

Also be sure to check out Flowmasters home page...and remember if your going for the straight piped look similer to the mustangs, the thinner muffler the better. And check out your local muffler shops becuase they usually have a very good selection of flows, borla's, ect.

Like I told you in the PM, Tanmann, my muffler is very thin and cannot be seen from any angle. I also painted the face of the muffler black so now it is completely invisible underneath my black car.

I was thinking of doing an exhaust this summer. For the b-pipe im gonna go with 2.5" Crush bent and a Magnaflow resonator(Dont know exact part #) and probably a magnaflow muffler or flowmaster.

I'd suggest you not install the resonator at first, MAX2000JP. Install everything else and drive around for awhile. You may find that you like the way your exhaust sounds without it. If you do, you'll save some money. And you can always add a resonator later if you want to.

I see what your saying. My brother has a Greddy Catback on his 99' along with a Stillen Y. It sounds real nice down low in the RPM range. Thats what I want my exhaust system to sound like, but not quite as loud. I did a little research and think I might go with a Edelbrock RPM series muffler with 2.5" inlet and dual 2.5" outlets. They are cheap too compared to Apexi or Greddy.

Y2kse, take a look at this muffler design.

http://www.dynomax.com/ultrafloss.stm

Its a straight through design, so its probably gonna drone a bit. I was looking more towards a chambered design myself, but this might do.

My bad. I just realized you have a Cattman Y-pipe. That definitely changes the equation. There's no way your exhaust system is going to be quiet with a straight-through muffler. That's why I eventually reinstalled my OEM rear section. I love the way my exhaust sounds now. But it took a long time and a lot of money for me to get it that way.

OK, let's try a different tactic. Install JUST a 2.5" crush-bent B-pipe without a resonator and leave your OEM rear section as it is. That should run you about $75.00 if you use aluminized steel piping. (It will cost you more if you want SS, but I'm not sure how much more.) Try that for awhile and see how you like it. The sound won't be nearly as low as your brother's Greddy, but at WOT it will positively growl. And you shouldn't get a lot of drone in the cabin. If it's too loud for you, don't mess with the muffler. Install a Magnaflow resonator instead and see how you like that. The Magnaflow should run around $90.00. Then and only then should you consider replacing the rear section. Just keep in mind that, as well as lowering the tone of your exhaust, any change you make to the rear section will amplify everything you've done in front of it.

Good luck.

I'm a big fan of DynoMax mufflers, MAX2000JP. And you happened to pick the UltraFlo, which is one of the best scavenging mufflers on the market. But it's not appropriate for use on systems with a Y-pipe. It would be WAY too loud. You'd be better off with a DynoMax Super Turbo instead.

i would, but i don't want to lose too much torque down low by adding a full .5" to the piping. i figure the .25" difference and mandrel instead of crush bending along qwith no resonator and an aftermarket muffler should give me plenty of gains - at least as far as exhaust is concerned...

I understand, Ironlord. But what makes you think that you'll lose low-end torque by going with 2.5" rather than 2.25". The stock exhaust is 2.25" throughout most of its length except where it's crushed or crimped. So all you're really doing is installing the same diameter piping as stock.

If it were up to me, I'd go with 2.5" crush-bent piping before I went with 2.25" mandrel-bent piping. But then it's not up to me, is it?

Is pipe-bent the same thing as crush bent? I have a 2.5" b-pipe w/o resonation and I think it's crush bent. It's been great.

It doesn't really make that much difference, Craig. The only time you really need mandrel bent piping is when you're running forced induction.

i thought stock piping was 2" all the way back. well, in that case, i might have to move up to 2.5". thanbks for the heads up. i know my baby will sound mean when i get it done though.
