FLOWMASTERS on a MAX
FLOWMASTERS on a MAX
I need some input. What do you guys think about putting FLOWMASTERS on a Max. Personally, I think it will sound pretty sweet. I doubt anyone has ever done it but let me know if you have.

Flowmasters sound great on a V6 . . . very deep and very mellow . . . but they make a V6 sound too much like a V8 to satisfy me. Some people, however, may think that's terrific!

But kids, the fact is we will NEVER sound fairly close to a relively big block V8. On the way to the doctors today we were behind a 95-98 Mustang GT 5spd with fat wheels, stripes and I am guessing mods because his exhaust was loud. It sounded soo awesome, like a dragon...our 3.0 v6's can't sound too close to a 4.6L V8.
My system sounds like a mini mustang GT with a lesser, lighter/higher rumble.
Nothing, IMHO, beats the sound of an American muscle/pony car V8. (some exceptions such as turbocharged/supercharged japanese V6's and porchse H-6s sound awesome, but in a different way)
Be sure to get a "3 chamber" Flowmaster, not a "2-chamber."
I had the "2-chamber" Flowmaster on my 3.2 litre SHO, and it was way loud!
The "3-chamber" adds the extra chamber to mello out the sound at cruising speed.
My advice...take out the resonator and leave the stock exhaust.
Much cheaper.

Like I told you in the PM, Tanmann, my muffler is very thin and cannot be seen from any angle. I also painted the face of the muffler black so now it is completely invisible underneath my black car.

I was thinking of doing an exhaust this summer. For the b-pipe im gonna go with 2.5" Crush bent and a Magnaflow resonator(Dont know exact part #) and probably a magnaflow muffler or flowmaster.

I'd suggest you not install the resonator at first, MAX2000JP. Install everything else and drive around for awhile. You may find that you like the way your exhaust sounds without it. If you do, you'll save some money. And you can always add a resonator later if you want to.

Y2kse, take a look at this muffler design.

Its a straight through design, so its probably gonna drone a bit. I was looking more towards a chambered design myself, but this might do.

I see what your saying. My brother has a Greddy Catback on his 99' along with a Stillen Y. It sounds real nice down low in the RPM range. Thats what I want my exhaust system to sound like, but not quite as loud. I did a little research and think I might go with a Edelbrock RPM series muffler with 2.5" inlet and dual 2.5" outlets. They are cheap too compared to Apexi or Greddy.

OK, let's try a different tactic. Install JUST a 2.5" crush-bent B-pipe without a resonator and leave your OEM rear section as it is. That should run you about $75.00 if you use aluminized steel piping. (It will cost you more if you want SS, but I'm not sure how much more.) Try that for awhile and see how you like it. The sound won't be nearly as low as your brother's Greddy, but at WOT it will positively growl. And you shouldn't get a lot of drone in the cabin. If it's too loud for you, don't mess with the muffler. Install a Magnaflow resonator instead and see how you like that. The Magnaflow should run around $90.00. Then and only then should you consider replacing the rear section. Just keep in mind that, as well as lowering the tone of your exhaust, any change you make to the rear section will amplify everything you've done in front of it.
Good luck.

i would, but i don't want to lose too much torque down low by adding a full .5" to the piping. i figure the .25" difference and mandrel instead of crush bending along qwith no resonator and an aftermarket muffler should give me plenty of gains - at least as far as exhaust is concerned...

If it were up to me, I'd go with 2.5" crush-bent piping before I went with 2.25" mandrel-bent piping. But then it's not up to me, is it?

Is pipe-bent the same thing as crush bent? I have a 2.5" b-pipe w/o resonation and I think it's crush bent. It's been great.
