first of all, i live in a very nice neighborhood... in whitestone... and i was totally shocked that it would happen to this neighborhood...
second, i had talked to a few mechanics tempting to convert my headlights to 00-01 models but they said it cannot be done cuz the 2002 models are wired only for HIDs...
they stole my HIDs in broad daylight!

Wow... I'm starting to get scared. I live in a farely decent neighborhood in Staten Island. I never really worried much about my HID's getting stolen. There's probably a hole ring of these HID thefts going around. I bet this is all these guys do, They just aren't ordinary criminals, there probably HID specific. I seriously never even thought about this before. But i guess it's like having a wad of cash sticking out from under your hood. I'm definitely looking into those locks that have been talked about in the other thread.

As far as Whitestone being a safe neighborhood. I went to Bayside HS, and most of my buddies lived around there, which was where most of our Teenage scandalous activity took place ! You would be surprised how many cars get stolen or vaandalized there , or the St. Johns parking lot ......

In answer to the posting, I agree with another posting that wiring up the earlier halogen's is certainly just a matter of wire splicing. Several on-line places have aftermarket wiring harnesses that might even work in this case. Hope this helps.

Clearly a thief is going to go to neighborhood where there is something worth stealing. Clearly HID's are in high demand and easy to get off. You have to take some additional protection (Tim's mounting screws, or a better alarm, etc.).

The most stolen or broken into cars aren't even nice new Cars. There mostly older generation Accords.
But I'm not saying every criminal lives in a poor rough neighborhood either... It is very possible that these guys are "professionals" and have a organized ring and infact live in the same neighborhood you do.

I agree... but i would have expected less of these vandelism happening around where I live...
I'm pretty sure these thiefs are not from the neighborhood and they're just driving back looking for victims...

So far I haven't heard of this hear in the NW part of the country, but hearing of it so much on the East coast has me worried. I hope they catch who is doing this to your cars before it gets any worse and/or spreads!

Its amazing to me how resilient theives are these days. You can hang out on any message board and hear about someone being robbed and no one saw or heard a thing. I'd just like to walk in on a robbery once and take the world's frustration out on him.

Here's some info:
I was in Queens this weekend. My father's neighbor works at a Nissan dealership. They're getting about 20 Maximas a week with stolen headlights!!!!! Apparently, alot of the victims live in the Bayridge area. Needless to say I was paranoid when I went to New York this weekend. I did go to Rosevelt Field Mall but that was the only place I parked my car other than my father's driveway.
If you live in NYC with a 2K2/2K3 Maxima you're going to be a victim. I found out also that these people may not be after the lights but the wiring harness or some type of electical device for the lights. One person had the lenses smashed, bulbs taken, and some type of electrica harness(I'm not sure what this is) taken. The dealership charged them $4000 to repair it!!!!!!!

How are these guys popping the hood? Are they just prying it back or is it that easy to get up. I dont want to wke up one day and see my baby blind.
Has anyone thought about maybe tapping into the existing hood sensor and running a wire to another sensor on the other side of the hood? Seems like it would throw people off since they are only looking for one???
What do you guys think?

Hey guys....
while I am not a fan of HID's at all, I feel for you.
Why not get a bunch of victims together to sign a request to Nissan to imprint on each housing the VIN of the vehicle (or do it yourselves) so IF they ever show up, it can be traced to a police report. I know, not a great solution, but at least it is something.

Chances are your car is less likely to get stolen in a bad neighborhood. The hood I came from you see a nice car you assume it belongs to a drug dealer; know one wants to mess with a drug dealer's car("You don't want to lean against a dealer's car furthermore try to steel it, that's a no-no") . This is very stereotypical but it is the truth. This is not always the case but 85% of the time it is.

If we can figure out how these guys are bypassing the hood sensor, we can come up with something better. Not bullet-proof, but better. I know most theives just pry them out the front, but some housings are showing up on eBay without damage to the mounting tabs or balasts.

I'm hoping that the fact that the door to the property management office in my condo complex is within 50 feet of my parking space deters the thiefs since it is staffed most of the day. Also, the fact that everybody in my garage knows me and my car (since I've got it up on jack stands at least once a month) will make it more likely that somebody would wonder who the guy wearing a ski mask in front of my car is.
We've had these threads before. If you have the means, put a camera on your car 24-hours a day...and don't be shy about advertising that fact. Having lived in Boston proper and NYC I can certainly understand that this may not be possible in the city.
