Screen in Intake Tract..

ok, doesn't this screen defeat the purpose of having something like the apexi filter that is supposed to smoothen and straighten out air flow?

Are you talking about the MAF?

Mine has been off for 2.5 years. I think the turbulence is more of an issue if you have the stock factory airbox (convoluted path for the air). If you have a k&n cone or similar filter that is a straight shot into the mass air meter, I think it is not necessary. The cone filter straightens the air.

There was a debate about this on the mustang site I subscribe to as well. I removed the screens from my mustangs 10 years ago. Also, none of the aftermarket mass air meter companies include these screens with their meters. If it was really such a benefit, they would include them.

Someone on that site had flow data of a mass air meter with a screen and without. The screen represented a 15% flow restriction.

15% thats alot of air being held back ... I would agree with the K&N filter concept ...

So you felt a 15% improvment in power?

Here is a quote from the article:

1. If you are driving a stock intake car this mod will do absolutely nothing for you.
2. If you have such a heavily modified engine that it would make a difference Why are you using the MAF system anyway? .....you should be on Speed Density with a custom chip.

While I can agree with point 1, point 2 makes me loose faith in this person. Speed Density is not the hot ticket for performance, ask any Mustang Racer, the first thing people do is upgrade to Mass Air. Just because his article looks fancy does not mean he is right.

Again, I will stand behind the point that if this was really necessary and promoted performance, every aftermarket mass air manufacturer would put the screen on their meters. I do not know of one that does.....I am sure they have done more research than he did.

But...I would agree that it basically will not make a power difference in a stock maxima, but you can not tell me that if I restrict airflow by 15% (by installing the screen) on my supercharged mustang that I will still have the same amount of power.

I believe that the cone filter will straighten the air enough. Too bad you have to destroy the screen to take it out, it would be an interesting dyno test.

Nor will I attempt to do so. But given the facts that (1) the MAF screen appears to serve a useful purpose, (2) I'll probably never supercharge my Maxima, and (3) removing the MAF screen would be a very good reason for Nissan to deny my warranty if my MAF sensor fails, prudence dictates that I leave my MAF screen alone.

Nevertheless, I agree it would be interesting to do before and after dyno runs to prove the point.
