FSTB noise
FSTB noise
hey wassup max owners,
i have a 2002 max se 6 speed and i just got the $55 FSTB from the org.
i put it on, and as i was reversing out of my driveway, i heard this really loud grinding noise. i have no clue what it is, and i hear it when i drive foward also, but not as loud.
any suggestions on how to solve the problem, or if anyone else had the same problem.
i made sure everything was tightened.
please help me
thanks

Re: FSTB noise
Check to see if it hits the top of the intake manifold, there may be some scuffing going on there. The engine moves around when you drive.
And let us know if you can get it to fit. In another thread, soundmike posted a link to his installation instructions.. in the 2K2 you need to extend the ends by turning 1-2 threads outwards, making the bar longer.

Yeah, I think just about every .org member that has put a FSTB on their 2k2 has run into this problem. The engine moves backwards a little when you go in reverse so it hits the FSTB if you put it on straight. You have to angle it back more.
Do a search and you should be able to find several posts regarding this and how people fixed it.
Hope this helps.

Actually, the engine moves forward on a reverse run and backwards on a forward run. I know, i took several video clips to make sure i got the install right.

Make sure the bar sits straight up and not at an angle. Additionally, extend the bar by turning each endbolt 1-2 times outward (as pvaudo's suggested).
I can't recall the amount of gap you need between bar/manifold but it should be roughly 1/2 of an inch. Just be sure you don't overextend it as you'll end up pincing the underside of your hood.
Hope this helps

To add. If you want to test out in your own garage if you're hitting the manifold/bar or not is to torque brake.
1) Apply parking brake
2) Press on foot brake
3) Turn car on, put gear in Reverse
4) Feather the accelerator (slip clutch i guess for manual owners) to 1.5k - 2k rpm.
5) Repeat 1-4 except do it in 1st gear
This is enough to make the engine move in the bay. If the bar hits you'll hear the same grinding sound.
