Racing a Honda Civic

Got a guy that has a Honda Civic with a Honda Prelude enigne in it. He claims it's turbo. I saw an exhaust on the car but he won't show me what's underneath the hood. I've seen him take off and his car is pretty quick. I want to race him but I'm not sure if I can win. Can anybody give some insight on whether or not I can take him.

Re: Racing a Honda Civic

-does he know you're stock?
-do you think he's lying?
-if you challenged a vette, told him you had a SC but wouldn't show him under the hood, should he be suspicious?

-there's only one way to find out... race him.

Re: Racing a Honda Civic

Hmm. Are you automatic or manual? I really don't know. If he does have a turbo-on top of a prelude engine...

Why won't he show you what's under the hood?

Most of the Civics I've ever seen would need a JATO to beat a 2k2.

Of course, he's probably got a JATO mounted next to his turbo-charged prelude engine (under his hood, of course).

Happy hunting.

I got an automatic. He said he never shows what's underneath the hood but just races. He wants to put 500 bucks on it but I'm not going to put 500 if I know i won't be able to win the race.

I would tell him "No look, no race"

HMMMMM........

My buddy is considering doing the same thing to his civic. If this guy has the VTEC engine(h22), then it is pushing 200hp. If he doesn't have the VTEC engine then he is pushing 160hp(h23). If he has a turbo on either of these engines then you will have your hands full, especially if it is the VTEC one. I have heard of some guys with NA H22 run in the 13's on there civic. I will double check some of these numbers and get back to you. If it is just the engine alone then I would race him, but not for money

His is a Vtec engine. I did check a couple of sites and that engine is pushing 200 hp stock. I think I'll hold of for now untill I get sme more mods done.

If what he says is true, there's no way you going to beat him. With a H22 engine and a turbo, the Civic should be capable of mid-low 13s I think. Maybe even faster if it's tuned right. There's a guy here in New Orleans that has a H22 and a turbo(either Greddy or HKS)in his Civic hatchback(5spd), he claimed he ran high 12s. I don't know if it's true, but I think it's possible.

I saw an h22 turbo hatch run an 11.8 at NE Dragway

there was an black hatch at import wars this year with a h22 turbo. He had a Tanabe Racing medallion exhaust, that thing was loud! He was getting consistent 11.8's all night. those engine are badass, especially in a civic hatch

Dont

He will beat you. If he has juice or turbo he will smoke you hands down. If he just has the H22 then he will pull on you. He might lose but with the little car and the big motor, you will prolly lose. Even if he doesnt have forced, all he needs is motor work and that thing will turn low 13s.

Be cautious.

Yea theres a reason he's not showing you what's under the hood. And 500 bucks sounds like he KNOWS he's gonna win. Watch out man

What he's saying is bs. You mean to tell me he'll tell you he has turbo but will not show you. That makes no sense. What, he thinks you'll figure out the boost, timing, fwhp, torque all by looking under the hood.
He's probably running NOS and knows you won't respect him if you figure it out.

This is what you do, take out your air filter, or do something to make the car sound mean as hell, pull up next to him, and tell him, let's race for $1k, but no peeking under my hood, and see what he says.

He'll probably let you peek under his hood, and then you let him see your stock engine, good way to see if you should run for the original $500 or not...

Hey man you got a point but my car is not stock. Got intake, exhaust, and an ignition upgrade. But with just that I don't think I can take him. Give me some more input.

Does he sound like he has a turbo? Have him rev it to see if you can hear the whine. If you dont hear that either he is stock, or hes definitely juicing it!! If hes that confident he will win then it most likely is juice...

Some of you people make me laugh !! Look man all you have to do is look for the front mount intercooler if his setup is actually any good he has to have a front mount or it's a gay.com setup. Or have him rev the engine and listen for the blow off valve. It really isn't that hard to spot a car with a turbo in it. The front mount gives it away all the time. But then again there are fake front mount intercoolers for the ricer peeps.

When racing Civics you never know. Could be a 12 second sleeper or a 17 second ricer.

Wrd!! Boost gauge, turbo timer,etc.. It really is easy to spot a turbo car. Go to your local track more often or local street racer hangouts..

Not true. You must have never seen ricers with fake gauges before...hell they even have fake blow off valve sounds.

Even so, it would still be wise not to race this guy with a boost gauge, fake or not, especially $500. A little to risky for me, but hey $500 for some is chump change, but not me.

Here's a thought...

lay low for a week or two and see if you can catch a glimpse of him racing someone else. Then you will know what the car can do and how confident you should be.

Even if the guy just had a Prelude engine in a civic and no turbo he would beat you. Think about it... 200hp in a car that's probably 400-500lbs lighter will pull on a 2k1 max that isn't boosted or juiced. Get some boost and then put down the 500 bones with confidence.

The problem is even without a Turbo he will probably beat you. I have a buddy that has a Honda Civic HB with the H22, and he ran a 13.4 1/4 naturally aspirated...NO TURBO, NO SC. I would not lay down $500 on the race, would definately race for $hits and giggles though.

OK, first, dont put money on a street race ever. Just plain stupid.
Second, if he says hes turbo, and wont show, its one of two things. Either he's runnin the giggle gas, or he is full of ****. Third, havent you ever seen or heard him drive by?? If you dont know what a turbo sounds like (esp. a turbo running enough boost to take you down), your in the wrong hobby. Race him for free. Shut his a s s up, its priceless. Happy hunting!

You could tell him you have a SC or a big bottle. Maybe it's like a poker game?

Better yet just offer a bracket race of sorts at the track.
