I'd defintely use high-temp paint myself.

Would it be a good idea to slap paint onto your firewall?! I'd make sure there will be no problems before doing this as the firewall can save your life, and at the same time, prevent purple heat splotches from showing up on the paint on the hood.

hmm looks hot, i would say you might have to take it off the car and USE A LOT of high temp paint. that stuff will prolly soak the paint right up.

(1) act as a thermal barrier to the hood itself in protecting the paint. I look at the hood liner as an "oversized ovenmitt". It doesn't act as a heat sink, just a heat barrier to the hood so it doesn't get too hot to touch; and
(2) as some measure to suppress or extinguish(?) a fire in the engine bay. I've read some folks think that the plastic fasteners would melt in the even of a fire in the engine bay allowing the liner to drop & choke off the fire's oxygen suppply. (If that's what actually happens, it's then it's like throwing a heavy blanket on a small fire to put it out.) I don't think applying paint/dye to the blanket will reduce its ability to do so.
My $0.02.

Started painting hood liner
After work, I cleaned my hood liner & laid on 2 coats of high-temp paint. The liner does soak up a bit (but not as bad as I thought). There are still some dark spots so I'll need a 2nd can of paint. It is starting to look good though! Even my 8 yr. old boy thinks so!
