OBD-2 / Car Code Sofware Owners - Question

I started playing with my OBD-2 software today but kept receiving the following pop-up window, which was preceded by a disconnect:
"No response time out. Communication with vehicle or module cannot be performed.".

In summary, it kept timing out and I never really could get into checking everything out since the time out would ocurr every 5-30 seconds. Frustrating.

I e-mailed Alex Peper but wanted to see if any 2k owners experienced the same.

Go to the drop down Options-->Gateway and post your settings.

You probably need to slow down the ISO-9141-2 speed. I usually just play around with them until I get a good connection speed on different vehicles.

Once I get home I'll post my setting for my Max.

Thank you for your help. The settings are as follows:

Filters tab:
Replies=Requests only
Number responses=2
Delete duplicate responses=not checked
Address accept filter=all
Default (SAE ISO)=not checked

Protocol tab:
ISO-9142-2=checked and speed=120 and byte=10 and message=20
KWP slow=checked
KWP fast=checked
GM VPW=not checked and normal=120
Ford PWM=not checked and normal=120
Timeouts=1
Auto reconnect=not checked
Clear cache on connection=checked
Manuf. Enhanced Login=not checked
Send Mode $3F Test Device Present=not checked
Initiate Mode $10 Diagnostic Operation System Degrade Level=0
Default (SAE ISO)=not checked

Interface tab:
rs232 serial port=1
Baud=38.4
Interface=single
Use Direct ISO=checked
Use fast tricom, indo-3=checked
Default (SAE ISO)=not checked

After looking at these settings, I believe i need to at least check "auto reconnect" on the protocol tab. I don't know much else about the other settings.

Default (SAE ISO)=not checked

Protocol tab:

Interface tab:
rs232 serial port=1
??Baud=38.4(19.2)
Interface=single(tricom, indo-3)I have the Tricom model though

??Use fast tricom, indo-3=checked
Default (SAE ISO)=not checked

After looking at these settings, I believe i need to at least check "auto reconnect" on the protocol tab. I don't know much else about the other settings.

I'm not 100% positive since I'm not sure what car I was scanning last, but I would change:
(1)ISO-9142-2=checked and speed=75 instead of 120
(2)Baud=19.2 instead of 38.4
(3)KWP fast=not checked
(4)If you don't have the Tricom model, change:
-"Use fast tricom, indo-3" = NOT checked

I'll play with those setting tomorrow afternoon but the KWP3 setting was grayed out meaning I could not change it. Perhaps one of the other settings causes it to be changeable. Thanks again.

Whoooah Tim, I was just throwing that out there, not saying it's the way to go.

I'm sure there are more reliable ways to set it up. Some cars like my friends Metro are VERY slow communicating, so I had to slow down the baud rate or else I'd lose communication. The Max seems to ALWAYS connect, so I don't usually "tweak" the setting to the maximum speed. I do sometimes lose a log file for some reason. I scan and then when I try to save the file, it says no data. I still haven't figured that out.

Did you play around with exporting the data to Excel yet?

Alright, I did some tweakin' but not much changed in the results, if anything.

My baud setting is grayed out and it will not let me drop down to 19.2. My KWP settings are checked and grayed out and will not let me change them. My ISO-9141-2 will let me change the speed but resets itself to 120 every so often, meaning it won't stay down in the 70's or 80's. I think it sets this automatically. Use tricom was checked and I unchecked it. It had no affect. I pecked on a few other options but to no avail.

The log indicates quite a few "ISO checksum error" messages as well.

I usually get a GPF (general protection fault) when I exit the application, after saving my log, too.

I have not heard from Car Code (Mr Peper). I plan on playing with it more this afternoon and/or tomorrow. If I don't get a response back from Car Code then I'll make some type of executive decision early next week as to the viability of the software. Useful product but useless if it's flaky or doesn't work efficiently. I hope it's just a config thing.

I received a response back from Alex Peper and he only said to increase timeouts to 2. I did and it had no effect.

I did figure out that you need to be disconnected in order to change all of the protocol settings. I reported that some options were grayed out. They become available if you first disconnet, then change them, then reconnect to try them. In other words, I dropped my speed to 19.2 and made some other adjustments. Turning off KWP Slow seemed to help but it still wanted to reconnect often.

I'm going to submit my entire setup to Alex Peper and maybe he'll see something.

I am happy to report that I've had success!

I tweaked the protocol ISO-9141-2 speed higher and it really responded to that. I set the following:
ISO-9141-2=checked and speed=450 and byte=1 and message=40.

Alex, with Car Code, recommended setting the speed higher than 150 and the message to 40. I started the speed around 150 then kept going up. I think I was higher than 450 at one point but it didn't like that.

I still get checksum errors in the log.

I've maintained connections up to 15 minutes at a time versus 5~30 seconds previously. I feel I can further tweak on the numbers to clear up the disconnect completely. I've asked for further help with the setup from Alex at Car Code, specifically with the checksum errors.

For all the gearheads that may read this, the timing was advanced 16 deg and the car runs lean, plus my intake temp maintains about 100 deg under normal driving, but climbs up into the 150's (and higher) while idling.

I did my first analysis this morning on the way to work.

First, though, I changed the baud rate back to 38.4, which was the default setting, and that cleared up the "iso chksum error" log entries I was receiving. I got a few disconnects, but again, I need to continue to tweak the speed setting. I changed no ISO speed settings from last night: I only change the baud rate this morning.

Does anybody know what the cryptic codes are? I know what IAT, MAF, ECT, and a few others are, but I would like a spelled out list if anybody knows where to find that information (in online help or on the website).

There are generic and manufacturer specific codes. These are all generic. I don't know of a link with the nissan specific codes, but it would be sweet if we found one.

some other info about the connection and timing

a GNU development source I'm keeping an eye on. A possible alternative to Alex's software half of the OBD-II scanner.

Have any of you guys with the Alex Peper scanner tried using other software to read data from his scanner?

Thanks, woosh, for those links. I have the ESM so I'll pour through there and see if anything comes up. There are "codes" in there, but, if I remember correctly, they are generic. I'll go back and look. If I find anything, I'll be sure to post.

what is this stuff you guys are talking about? Sounds like an OBD-2 scanner software. Does this let you ajust some parameters in the car like adjusting timing? Is this like an Autotap? www.autotap.com My cousin has an autotap for his GP GTP and now I am interested in getting one for my Maxima. Only thing is, it cost $200 which isn't that bad but I am looking for something similar that has been proven to work on the maximas (96-2003) Also, is information given in real time, (Engine speed, timing, vehicle speed, KR.. stuff like that. Anyhelp will be appreaciated. I am going to search this topic further so if I find anything not mentioned I will post it. Thanks in advance.

The software does not allow changing of parameters. Look at http://www.obd-2.com to see some screen shots and a full list of the features of the software (screen shots included).
