2k2 auto vs 97 Audi A4 manual
On Saturday I drove my brother over his friend's house and I see a Blue A4 parked in front of the house. I asked him whose car is that and he said one of friend's brother's friends (I know kinda confusing). The kid was standing outside so I decided to talk to him. I noticed he had two gauges on the left siede so I ask him what he had done to his car,he had an intercooler, intake, exhauset and blow off valve. I asked him if he wants to race, and he was like sure. So we go on this 15mph street behind forest preserve, 1/2 mile straight away.we had 9 people watch the race. We both take off and it was dead even all the way to 1st, all the way through second I had him by a car and pulling away, as soon as I hit third I heard my radar detector go off and I decide to slam on my brakes, and so does he. We both got lucky cause about 1/4 mile down the road was a forest preserve cop waiting. Pheeww let me tell u close call. BTW he wants to race next week again when he gets his comp chip, Ill keep u guys posted how that went, maybee even get a digital camera if I find one.

I saw a few s4's at the track the same day I went. One auto was running 15.1,and the other ran 14.9.. the modded 5 speed ran a 14.3, with a chip and other crap... Not much of a difference..

Turbo Question...
Ok, I dont really know much about turbochargers, except for how they function courtesy howstuffworks.com (great site). Question: when equiped with a blow-off valve, when does it "blow-off"? I thought they blow-off when you release the throttle. So, why would an automatic car need a blow-off valve? There is no need to let go of the gas. Will it blow-off when the car shifts?

The reason for a BOV (I know it in basic terms), is to prevent pressure going back towards the turbo. In a worst case scenario, the pressure can actually force the turbine to spin in the opposite direction. So factory setups usually vent the pressure back into the intake, while aftermarket BOV's (such as the HKS SSQV) vent to the atmosphere. This is what creates such an incredible WHOOOSH!! (especially at 15psi). I own a 3rd. gen. Supra with the HKS BOV, and the Supra is automatic, and I let off the gas just to hear it as I scare the hell out of pedestrians, and car owners! The real purpose though, is to prevent pressure to go back towards the turbo, therfore helping preserve the turbo. This is my VERY simple understanding of the BOV, but I think I got the main purpose across. I Just wished my Max came with turbo; 6spd. 255 turbocharged hp Maxima would be bliss; oh well there's always Stillen.

Seriously though, you're correct: The purpose of the BOV is to avoid compressor surge.
8702, if you were to autocross an auto-turbo car, you'd appreciate the BOV as you let off/reapply your throttle.

2002 Max will spank an A4 1.8t, in most cases..
I just traded my A4 1.8t in for 2002SE6.
I went through the A4 pretty well, unless you go to a "Stage 3" set up they top out around 240/250 horse. Stage 3 will get up over/around 300 horse.
If the kid was using a BOV one of two things were present.
1. he had a Stage 3 kit withh a Garret T25 or T3 from APR or PES (maybe something he cobbed together is a possibility also), these turbos require BOVs.
2. He was a ricer who wanted a cool sound from his turbo. Audis/VWs use a K03/04 utilizing a BPV (by pass valve - alittle different from BOV) BPV's vent the excess boost back into the intake for fuel efficiency and EPA related issues - resulting in no HISSS noise. Using a BOV on one of these engines results in a lean condition and is actually detracting from their performance (I guess the computer makes adjustments for the pressure variations in the intake or something)
Anyways, a stick 02 max should spank the A4 as long as it isn't some "stage 3" hybrid.
As for the S4, that WILL spank the maxima, no disrespect to the max. S4s run low 14s out of the box. They always hook off the line.
An ECU upgrade puts them over 300 horse.
