Help with side door moldings???
Help with side door moldings???
Hey Folks,
I was wondering if anyone has replaced his or her side door moldings before. I have a 2k2 so anyone with some tips or suggestions on how to do this would be great.
Some MORON over the holiday weekend totally took out both of my passenger side door moldings and now I have to replace. Cost $100 dollars. Dave B. over at Town North Nissan told me that they were stuck on there with some double-sided tape adhesive.
Does anyone have any recommendations on what I should use to remove any adhesive left behind from this so-called "Double Sided Tape"?
I'm looking not to damage the paint any more then what Nissan has done already.

Just working with DS tape
and I assume that it is a foam backed kind of tape when I look in there, you will want to clean all traces of the tape off. Now how to to that specifically with Nissans fragile paint...dunno.
I worked on my rims this weekend pulling off the tape by soaking it in Oops for about 30 seconds, and scratching off using my fingernail. Then I washed it a couple of times and applied a couple coats of wax. As far as I could tell I did not damage the finish. Just got ****ed finding out that thet DA's at the tire place PRY off the old weights and left gouges in my rims...Grrrrr
If you dont get it completely clean it might pop off, gap, or find some other way to irratate you.
Good luck!

Thanks Colonel
A buddy of mine told me to try a product called Krud Kutter to get the adhesive off. I guess you can get it at Home Depot? I'll give it a try this weekend.
Does anyone know if Denatured Alcohol will hurt car paint?

Another thing to remember
If you work slow enough and patiently, you can "pick" one side of the tape and pull very slowly and consistantly and that will leave you less to have to use chemicals on.
On my old car I had to remove pin-striping and actually used the end of a old Bic Pen cap. Its still risky, but its a soft plastic that tends to bend rather than scratch...but that was also on soft paint too. It did very well
Try and find something with very little petroleum/alcohol products as possible. I would not use the denatured alcohol.
And if worse comes to worse and you dont want to use chemicals....hot water and soap...
Hmmmm wonder what a pressure washer could do..? Probably to get a high enough PSI to get the tape off would proably cut the paint off too!

I worked at a body shop.....
Just call a local shop and have them shave it off. The guys where I worked used an air power tool that basically just shaves off all the stickiness and then they use a chemical that is safe on the paint called dealorsol to get the rest off. This chemical also helps eliminate any grease on the paint that would deter the new tape sticking to the doors.
One good thing is to make a small mark with a grease pencil where the markers go so you don't put them too high - too low.

Thanks Guys!
All are great suggestions and like I said I will give it a go this weekend. I'm sure with a little patience and thought things will go well.
Wish Me Luck

I wonder how much it would cost to have a body shop paint them???
