G35 or 2K2 SE

Graduation is coming up and I need to decide which to spend my signing bonus on. I LOVE the G35, but I really like and respect my little ol' 3rd gen Max (which makes me want another max w/ ~100 more hp). The G35 is rear-wheel and does 0-60 in 5.4! I don't see the max turning out those #'s (stock) and it costs about the same. What do you guys think? (let me guess....the Maxima)

Go for a test drive

G35 all the way. The Infiniti service alone is reason enough.

If you can afford it, go for the G35. As much as we all love our Maxima's, I don't think any of us are going to dispute that the G35 is a better car.

Sure you can't wait till the Coupe is out?

I agree. I would go with the G35. RWD and much better handling from what I have read especially with the sport package. Infiniti customer service. So many good reasons. I would wait and get the coupe unless you want four doors, then I would still wait for the manual in the sedan.

WAIT for the 350Z

Man, I spent my signing bonus as on a 2K Max. While I love it, I am so jealous that the G35 is out and better. Plus, damn it if I won't be able to get a 350Z for a few more years as a house will be next and I can't keep dropping mod money on a car that I am going to sell.

So, go G35!! and congrats on graduating

I went through that same decision process myself about a month ago... I purchased a 2K2 Max SE for 3 reasons:

* 6 speed manual on Max...auto only on G35 (for about a year)
* 6 speed Max is faster than G35 (where are you getting 5.4 for 0-60?
It is more like 6.4 0-60)
* Huge price difference. They sell the G35's close to sticker and
sell the Max's below invoice. When all is said and done, you
are probably looking at about $6-7K in price difference.

I am a BIG fan of the G35, but a bigger fan of shifting for myself. Without a manual transmission, I couldn't consider it.

You won't go wrong either way though...

5.4 sec 0-60

Check out this month's Road and Track - she's right on the cover. I think that I am going to wait for the coupe and the 6 speed. I saw a pic of the coupe and WOW Daddy likey! My fiance wants me to get the sedan though, so I don't know. Depending on how well my fiance's 1992 Olds' 98 (150k) holds up once we're both out of college, I'll probably will wait to buy for another year or two b/c hopefully then they'll be coming down off those sticker prices. My '93 GXE is still going strong with 110K and many more to go.
How much can you buy the 2K2 SE Maxs for if they're selling them below invoice?
I was also looking at the I35s that are based of the Max also. I know it doesn't come with a manual, but I can probably do without b/c, damn, that's just a nice car for the $$.

P.S. GO VOLS!

BIG CORRECTION!!!!!

WOW WOW WOW! I meant that the Z350 could go to 60 in 5.4! My bad! I was thinking the G35 b/c it's the same thing except for the skin and a couple of other things. Man, I need to get more sleep! Sorry.

Geez guys!

How much signing bonus are you all getting??

My signing bonus was -500. That's right, negative 500. I had to spend that money just to get hired.

Anyway,

I would not get the G35. I think it's ugly. The coupe is awesome, but not the sedan.

If I were you, I would wait for the coupe. Or, if you want 4 doors, I would get the 2k3 Maxima. The G35 sedan is really small, it's backseats are not very roomy at all. In my philosophy, getting a 4 door car with a small backseat is nullyfing the purpose of getting a 4 door in the first place.

Sure, the G35 is RWD and has 5-speed auto, but it costs like $5k more than the Maxima. To me, the price difference is not worth it unless you get the coupe.

G35 is a work of art. Not to say the Maxima isn't a beautiful car. However, I sat in the G35...and that thing just calls me.

Go test drive that rear wheel drive G35 and your decision will be made for you.

Obviously if you're looking for a car under $30,000 then the G35 is not the car for you. That's goes without saying.

I looked at the G35 before I picked up my Max. The G35 is a sweet car, by the drivers side is so damn small. I'm 6'3" so the G35 wasn't even an option. I would have gone with that if I could fit in it!

G35, no question. If it had been available in 2001 when I was shopping, that would have been my choice. Although, I tend to say...wait for the coupe.

G35

outperforms the 330I in handling and 0-60, and 100-0 braking, for about $13K less, G35 might be a little more costly than the MAXIMA, but its definitely worth it. wait for the coupe or the manual and you won't regret it.

Well, right now I'm working for Ford Motor Company at their Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, KY - I'm the only Maxima in the whole parking lot! This is my second internship here and my 3rd overall. I'm getting my degree in Logistics & Transportation from the U. of Tennessee, Knoxville. My fiance is getting her masters in Accounting and she's getting here school loans paid off for her signing bonus. Me......I'm not sure where I want to work yet, definitely not Ford, but my roommate got a 10K sign-on bonus when he graduated last semester w/ an L&T degree. So, I'm going to remain skeptical, but I think I'll get around that. Starting average for my degree is 40K and that's just average. I have 3 internships w/ 2 huge companies and a good GPA to boot (3.75 major). So, not to blow my own whistle, I consider myself above average in this category, but if it will pay off, I have yet to see.

Well, I got a $5K signing bonus when I started with Accenture. Just remember that they tax the $hit out of those things so be smart and plan accordingly. Even though you are getting out of school and things look rosey, I have lost a lot of friends to layoffs recently. In retrospect, I would certainly live WAY under my means for a while untill this economy settles out. I realize that you are a good student and have nice credentials, but I do too and have an MBA and I am still worried about being laid off. Just my $.02

No doubt. This morning I got on the elevator and this guy comes running to get on right before the door shut. He had this Anderson bag with "Anderson" written in HUGE orange letters on the side. I hide my Accenture badge and asked him if he had a shredder inside that bag......for some reason he didn't laugh??!!

A sign on bonus is a bonus that you get from a company if you agree to work for them. Depending on how large the bonus is you might have to commit to work for a set period of time. I just graduated from Pharmacy school, and received a $50,000 sign on bonus, but had to commit to work for 3.5 years for this company.

Regarding the Jag X-type...have you sat in one of these yet? I test drove one, and it was one of the most uncomfortable cars I have ever drove in my life! It felt like you were sitting on a piece of concrete...absolutely no cushion at all, and when I found that it was built on the Ford Contour Frame, I said no thanks. Before you go jag, make sure you check out the consumer reports, and reliability info.

G35 6spd. Coupe, Infiniti badged 350Z, no question about it. I love the I35 too, for the $$$, the 6spd. Max is a better deal.

My thoughts exactly, the type Jag. seems to be clouded with initial manufacturing defects. Jaguar seem to be very stubborn at accepting blame for them.

The G35 is awesome. we just bought one and it is totally worth it. interior is smaller, but fit and finish as well as straight engine power makes it awesome. 2nd gear is amazing in that car.

X-type = Ford Contour/Mondeo + Taurus Duratec engine

And its pricey as hell for what you get.

Please go test drive

a G35 before you comment, such a nice ride. And while the rear end hasn't grown on me yet, it took me many months to like the fifth gen Maxes rear when it came out. Oh btw when you arrange for service on your G35 if you need a loaner you might get a QX4 or a Q45.
