All of a sudden I really like my 2K2.
Well Nissan didn't disappoint me; it's ugly as hell. I think the new Altima is ugly as hell and this looks just like an overstuffed Altima. I think Nissan should of retired the Max after the 2K3 model year.

I don't know about that....

As far as the 04, I'll reserve judgement on that until I see it in person. It took 2 years for the 5th gen to grow on me. Nissan never seems to be able to get the rearends of the Maxima to look decent and flow with the rest of the car.

It doesn't look too bad. A little bit Audi, a little bit Taurus, a little bit Altima. But it's the kind of look that will grow on many people, I'm sure. Remember when the 5th gen came out? Lots of Maxima fans thought that was the ugliest one, but it's done well.
I don't think I would buy it, though, since it will be a full-sized car, and I don't need a car that big. Being built on the Altima platform will hopefully make it a good performer.
For now, I'll keep my '01 SE, and I'll just wish the '04 luck and I'll admire it from afar.

Fender Flares
One thing I don't like, and I think this is the same on the Altima, is how the front fender flare seems higher than the rear. If anything, it should be the other way around. But preferably, they are the same height. I am sure it's "stance" will even this out. But in the picture, it looks quite noticeable. I think that is what someone was talking about when they mentioned "SUV stance". Or something like that. I like my 2K allot better as of right now. But, it did take me a while to warm up to the 5th gen Max. So who knows......

C'on now. You guys haven't seen the "whole" picture of the car yet...the quality of the interior/options/performance. Give it some times, I am sure you all will find things to like about it. As with any recent products from Nissan, their stylings are of acquired taste. Atleast the design is unique and "somewhat" innovative, compare to the mundane (boring) styling coming off from Toyota or Honda products line. I have to admit, Nissan has been really pushing the envelope w/their new design!

engine answer is right in front of you dummies
Anyone catch the "3.5" badge on the right side of the trunk? That means the VQ's in there....but is the 3.5 just part of the styling, or does it imply that maybe there will be other engines available in the future?

Unless Nissan is as able to reduce vehicle weight without compromising structural rigidity as Mercedes is... that new max is bound to weigh at least a couple hundred pounds more... (history precedes itself... haven't all gen's of maxi's gone up at least a hundred pounds per revision?) That's gunna put it closer to the sloth-like nature of the TL-S in the curves and off-the-line. But this is just my theory.

I Think I Like It, But....
My $0.02 worth:
-As much as I like the size and interior room of my 2K1, a larger interior and trunk would be nice (plus being 6'-2", the headroom with the sunroof could be better...).
-I hope they managed to reduce the Titanic-like turning radius by at least a few feet.
-I hope the interior is a lot like the photos of the Teana that showed up here on the .org about a month ago, especially the wood/brushed metal trim on the console and the reclining seats.
- AWD is really needed as the current power output of the 3.5VQ is beginning to reach the practical limits of the FWD layout and intruding on the refinement level of the Maxima.
-The quad exhaust tips look cool.
-I'd have to see more of the backend to pass judgement on the styling. Ditto with the front end but I think it will probably be very similar to the Teana.
-THE BEAM AXLE IS DEAD! R.I.P.!
_ Those brawny wheel arches look agressive but the downside is that they will be the primary target for parking lot door dings - and be VERY noticable with that flat vertical plane at the lip. We do live in a cruel world....
-Maybe Nissan got the chipped paint issue fixed {insert your own derogatory Nissan-related, expletive-laced comment here}.
-Keep in mind that the 6th Gen Maxima will be made in the U.S.A. in Smyrna TN and not Japan.{insert your own derogatory "goober/hillbilly" comment here} Quality may be a REAL issue, especially for the first year model.
I think I'll keep my 2K1SE for now and wait to see if the quality issue becomes critical, what engine/trans/drivetrain configurations will be available, what the performance is like, and what price Nissan places on it before I jump to a 6th Gen.. My guess, based on what they've done with the very agressive pricing of the 350Z is that the new Maxima will still offer a really big bang for the buck.

ummm
Looks kind of like a bloated Altima with Lincoln Town car lights grafted onto the back...It doesn't even matter if they can make it perform, because it's going to be like $40k and huge. Time to hold on to my fifth gen...
#69
I'm not feeling it. I remember when the 5th Gen's 1st came out and I thought they looked pretty sharp and knew that I would get one. I'm thinking this car's gonna drive more like a boat then the 02/03's. And besides, reading through all the threads here, Nissan's customer service is certaintly lacking quality, so I know I will try to ascend to the next level: Lexus!

holy crap!
I shouldn't be too terribly surprised as the spy photos seemed to be the real deal IMHO.
My first blush is that you could not see this car sliding sideways across the high desert floor and actually believe it. To me it feels like it is missing what makes the Maxi the Maxi. I will try very hard to develop a wait-and-see attitude on this one...

I think the car looks pretty nice. Well the Front 3/4 of it. Once it gets to the trunk it just goes downhill. Literally! the taillight looks like its sloping down or something. I'm totally not feeling it right now, but then again If I really think about it. That back end of the 6th gen still looks better than the backend of my black 5th gen. If i had the opportunity to change cars I most likely would not get a 6th gen. Not because it doesnt seem like it will be a good car, but because its a bit too damn big for my tastes. And It will probably still have the same 3.5 with 255hp. That just isnt enough. If it was like a 3.5 with like 280-300 hp that would be a diff story. hah. But I could definitely see someone in their Early 30s getting the new 6th gen. Dunnos if that is good or bad. But when I'm done with this max in id say 5-6 yrs =] I'm pretty damn sure I'm not gonna be gettnig another max =/. Well I guess ill be hoping for my current dream/ realistic car. Black G35 Coupe

I wasn't thrilled with the 5th Gen when it was introduced, and now I drive one. If the 2004 has 280 hp and AWD, I can get over the bad looking rear end in no time at all. I was thinking about trading in the 2k1 for a 2k3, but now I'm waiting until next spring to see exactly what its all about.

In time, the '04 Max may start growing on me, but we'll have to wait and see. At 33, I'm already starting to go through my mid-life crisis, so 2-doors out there now are looking sweet. Acura's current CL Type-S is a prime example. Damn!

I'd love a coupe, but damn, its gotta be a ***** getting the kids in and out of their car seats. If the 2004 is a little bigger than the 5th gen, that's okay with me. It's still not a minivan or an SUV.
