FWD, 3.5L V-6 with a little more power than the 02-03. This is from an engineer at NNA who is in a position to know.

you are somewhat right.
Nissan will probably say it has 280hp, but in reality it'll probably have 255hp

This is from Nissan Speed over at Freshalloy and Caranddriver.com sounds good...

These are facts, not opinion:
Horsepower: 255+ (TBA)
3 transmissions available: 5sp Auto w/manual shift mode, 4sp Auto, 6sp Manual
Vehicle Dynamic Control available on both auto transmissions
Dual exhaust with 4 chrome tips
Power folding mirrors standard on SE (available on SL)
Skyview Roof standard on all models. Sunroof is an option. This skyview roof is narrower than a typical sunroof, but runs the lenght of the car. From the exterior it will appear as one solid piece of tinted glass, but from the interior it will be split into front and rear by a narrow beam that will be coverd by headliner material. There will also be sunshades to pull shut to completely block off light if desired.
Bose will be the premium sound system, not Rockford.
A rear center console will be available on both trim levels (reduces seating to 4)
Dual Zone Climate Control with rear AC vents.
Center display integrates displays of HVAC, radio, and trip computer (similar to Murano).
Optional DVD Nav system.
It will be revealed at Jan 5 Detroit Auto Show
It will be available as soon as March 5, 2003.
20 gal fuel tank
18' wheels on SE model
Cornering lights
speed sensitive wipers
tilt/telescopic steering wheel
6 colors: winter frost, liquid silver, spirited bronze, champagne mist, red opulence, radiant ember
Full size spare comes with VDC option
Helical limited slip diff on manual SE model.
Elite package includes rear center console, rear sunshade (power), and rear heated seats.
Rear door courtesy lights. Rear reading lights.
Sirius or XM radio available on both models.
Interior colors: cafe latte, black, frost, and burnt orange/black.
Two exterior colors from 2003 are still available: onyx and majestic blue.

So no VDC on 6-speed? That is pretty stupid of Nissan.
Strange, but my friend's new Z 6-speed does have the VDC.

The Maxima has always been Nissans flagship, however in 2k2 it got kinda lost in the mix. The 2k4 will the return of the Flagship. Nissan wont just dump the Sports Car soul, think of it as an A6 or 5-series almost, they are still sporty. I bet AWD WILL be an option. and prob about 280hp. I dont think it will be RWD. Id expect some new options will be found on the Maxima they wont be on any other Nissan. Price Tag MSRP base 29k, my guess, fully loaded 35-37k

Hopefully, the folks in Mississippi can build them better than they now do in Japan....and/or that the Nissans buyers who select lowest cost bidders will see the light...and we'll see a return to quality built automobiles using quality parts. If so, great. If not, I wouldn't buy another Max(and perhaps any Nissan product) for $29K fully loaded. BTW, I have owned over 12 Nissan vehicles since 1973 and thought every one of them was great....until I sampled the 'new' Nissan via a 2k3 Max SE.

i heard its gonna shift up the class for the new max, where its a luxury sedan. not a sports luxury sedan anymore. its gonna be hangin on the bottom of the list with high class BMW's and benz. lots of interior work done. huge improvement. im guessing the price is gonna be around $35,000-$40,000. what models are there?? SE, SL, GLE, and GXE???

what exactly is 'radiant ember'? Is it like a copper orange color?

There's no green color variant?

Genius' pick the color green...but you didn't pick it (line from Meet the Parents). I love that movie!

Seriously, I'm wondering if the new max will have the CVT like the Moron-oh (I mean Murano). Maybe that's what they meant by 3 tranny choices. A manual (6-speed), a conventional 4-speed auto, and a CVT with 5 artificial gears.

Speaking of the CVT, who here really trusts that Nissan will not have problems with this? I mean, Nissan actually programmed a slip between 1st and 2nd gear in the 2k's. I'm really not getting a warm and fuzzy about this new tranny. Thoughts?

Everybody's too critical. Who cares, if your not going to buy one. If any of you who have talked crap about this maxima and come back and we find out you bought one I am going to make fun of you. I see everyone saying it's so ugly but they'll wait to make a final judgement call until they find out how much HP it has. If it has a lot they will think it looks awesome. If it doesn't increase they will think it looks ugly. People are crazy these days.

Well, new Z has a 5-speed Auto tranny with sport shift, so I think Max will get that as 5-speed Auto tranny.

Go to www.autoweek.com they have a fresh new picture, released by Nissan N.A., of the 2004. One seriously ugly ****. I mean it's just a luxury version of the Altima . I mean what the ***** were they thinking? I'm getting a G35c no later than this Summer, wether I can afford to keep the Max or not.

You mean to tell me NO charcoal gray!!! aww man!

And yeah, how about that comment about the Tranny?
I've heard that even some of the 5Gen owners have had some issues with the trannies in those... What's up with that? Is Nissan not getting the message about their trannies?
::Beef 'em up Nissan!:::

I wonder if Nissan will take the Tranny issue into account for this 6Gen.

We know this much it is going to have less than 287 HP and 274 l/b of torque Z(specs) and equal to or slightly more than 255hp and 246 l/b torque current Maxima (specs). Rememeber Nissan did not change the horsepower on the 95 when it was introduced with a brand new engine, torque rose of course and the 4th gen was a lighter car.

Off subject but still shocking is that the Altima 3.5SE fully loaded is just under 30K

i was at the nissan dealership yesterday, i was checking out a new Z for fun, anyways, me and the sales guy started talking about the new maxima.
i said "i heard a lot, over the internet and such, that the new maxima will have a V8 and RWD or AWD, is this true"
he said "well, it WILL have a V8, with 310HP, but it WILL be FWD."
i said "wouldn't that be a hard car to drive, 310HP with FWD? i mean, with all that torque steer?"
he said "no, it will be fairly easy to drive, and should drive better than the current maxima, this car will be larger and heavier, so it should stick to the road better"
there was a silence, cause i had no clue what to say to that.
so then i said this "well, at least it will still be considered sporty with its manual transmission, i'm assuming it will still be a 6-speed?"
he said "no, they aren't giving it a manual, instead, it will be an auto with manual shift mode"
i couldn't take it at this point, so i say "where are you getting this information from, because i think its all wrong"
he said "my boss, the manager, he knows everything about nissans"
i said "let me talk to him, i want to hear this out of his mouth, because it sounds stupid to tell you the truth"
he said "well, uhhh, he isn't here right now, he's gone home today"
so i said "give me his name, and i'll take to him tomorrow, or the day after"
thats when i thanked him for his help, and went to my car, when i got in, i just started cracking up, it was so funny. this guy pulled so much BS out of his a$$ it was ridiculous.
thats what i hate about dealers, they lie so much, why? especially with nissan releasing official specs on the max in less than a month, this guy should have kept his mouth shut.
